What exactly makes a person a prophet from god?

Since this question appears in the Christianity section, I won't attempt to address other kinds of prophet... only the biblical view.

In one sense, only God makes a person a prophet. The historical meaning of the word is essentially "one who speaks God's message." Even among the Old Testament books of prophecy, much of the content goes something like "this is what God says to the people." Only a small percentage of prophecy fortells the future.

By extrapolation, anyone who faithfully communicates to others what the Bible teaches is telling God's message and qualifies as a prophet in this general sense. Preachers who correctly apply Bible teachings in sermons likewise qualify.

The best known Bible prophets received messages directly from God. There is some debate whether this kind of prophet is still operative. The Bible commended people for checking out everything Paul said against accepted scriptures [Acts 17:11 they "examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."], so I would assert that no prophet of God would say anything inconsistent with what the Bible already teaches. I do believe that God still "speaks" to people (i.e. communicates clearly), but He would not contradict Himself or change any rules since we are told in Jude 1:3 that we should defend "the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints."

I am aware that some churches have people in a position or office called "prophet." I do not know exactly what this means to them, so I acknowledge my answer is incomplete.

With enough inappropriate drugs....almost anyone can be a prophet of god...of mother earth...of FSM....of IPU...of the third star on the left....

the trick is getting enough dolts to follow you....
a word of advice..it's not good form to throw up after a mystic experience....you don't attract a lot of members like that....
