thanks rose i want to explain what dowray is :
dowray : in the hindu culture the hindu women are requiered to pay to the family of the new husband a determinated amount of money this money is determinated for how rich or poor the man is , if the man is poor the woman will have to pay alot if the man is poor the woman will not pay that much . in many cases the woman is not able to pay and because of this many are murdered by their husband ( the law is ok whit this ) just so he is able to marry another wife .

This is what I know of Hindus. They worship thousands of gods. Monkeys, cows, snake, women with several arms etc. They have the cast system. Things might have changed now but having a female child was the most negative thing in this world. Matter affact millions of abortions were performed once the sonogram technology came in affect and people could tell the gender of the child. This has led to a wide spread shortage of females in generations to come. I personally have known 2 Hindu families where a female member was burned to death because she did not come with plenty of dowrey. This was a educated family! Orthodox Hindus are vegetarians and they consider every part of the cow sacred including any excrement. Hindus want very badly to be westernized. Many of them are highly educated and very pleasant to deal with! Currently Hindus are in some very top positions in USA!

The ignorance being displayed in this Q&A is frightening. Firstly, while the majority of Indians are Hindus, the two labels are not interchangeable. There are over 100million muslims in India as well...and a few million Christians too. Let's not forget the millions of Budhists, Jains and Sikhs who are also not Hindu's.
So you need to be clear on whether your question refers to Indians in genral or Hindus in particular.
Furthermore, for those 'experts' who have nicely summarised Hinduism is a few pejorative words...I lament for the education you are or have undergone!
As to some of the crap being spouted .... most Hindus are not vegetarian. Vegetarianism is a fad of the last five hundred years or so. Of the 1 billion people in India...more than half eat meat/seafood (but rarely beef).
There are cultural reasons why Indians abhor beef eating. Americans abhor eating dogs, but Koreans don't. Germans love eating horse...but would you. Aussies eat crocodiles and kangaroos....would you. You probably eat pork....millions would find that repulsive! What's not to 'get about the cow thing'?
If you know people who have been burned/killed for dowry, then firstly you are in a minority; secondly you are mixing with some pretty stupid undeucated and backward people and thirdly if you did not report them then you are complicit in their crime!
There are a few other steroetypes mentioned which, while having a basis in historiacal accuracy and media sensationalism, are not as widespread as some would have you believe. Judging hinduism by the practices of a fundamentalist minority would be akin to me extrapolating from your leader and saying all Americans are bible-bashing rednecks who can't talk or think properly! Now that would be exaggerating, right!?

Who the hec said that? The hindus are mostly from India. Although they are every where in the world.I think gandi was hindu. They are the most fair people in the middle east. They treat their women Better than Muslums. But there are still alot of problems for women in those countries Boys are preferred to girls because of the huge dowry that must be given upon Marraige. 99 percent of abortions are female fetuses. When a husband dies the woman is expected to kill herself to be with him in heaven if the woman does not kill herself she is treated lower than scum and lives like a piece of dirt for the rest of her life. Although the situation has improved with time, in the rural villages wife burning and other problems are still common. Like if the wives family doesn't keep giving dowries the husbands family will actually catch the wife on fire kill her and say it was a kitchen accident. But I am actually impressed with India because the conditions for women in their country are advancing 100 times faster than in other Middle Eastern countries.

Sabrina-
India is located in South Asia, not the Middle East.
You seem to think you know a lot about Hinduism, but you're misinformed or have your ideas mixed up somehow.
At the very least, you shouldn't be the one calling other people dumb.

You are precisely the type of person which gives Americans a bad reputation abroad. For every talented American, and there are so many it would take the rest of my life to name them off, how many idiots are there in the US like you?
We have a labour shortage here now, so put in your application, and for sure you can qualify to wash dishes up here....we have lots of East Indian restaurants for you to do some research!

Hinduism is like Buddhism but it is real descriptive and goes a real long way to get back to the point that "This is It". Brahma looks in 4 directions at once.
It realizes that Atman is Brahma, as in Buddhism where the self doesn't end at the skin.
But I don't get the "cow" thing.

I think I know what you are getting at, the free trade bit Bush wants to strike up with India. He just has more and more bright ideas. However, the problem is that wages are the lowest part of domestic gross product they have been since 1947 because they keep allowing/inviting cheap labor in to undercut our domestic wages and benefits. This is bad for our workers and social services, regardless of where they come from. When we say we are against illegal immigration and strains on our services, we don't mean we would like it better if it were from India than from Mexico.
We don't like it, at all.

A Hindu is one who follows his or her own religion of Sva-Dharma, practices Bhakti (devotion) on any form of God (who is Brahman or creator of the universe), practices virtuous path of life believing in the concept of Karma for the purpose of Moksha. Sva - is the "self". Karma is the law of eternal onus of one's actions leading to balanced effects for all times to come. Moksha is the ultimate resolution of life and death cycle.
Some have proposed that a Hindu is one who believes in the Vedas ("Vaidik Dharma"). But this is a simplification. Not all Hindus believe in the Vedas; for example, the Lingayat people believe in non-vedic Agamas. It can be safely said that Hinduism is a way of life which has led to many civilized forms of religion.
The most accurate definition of a Hindu is one who declares oneself a Hindu. Hinduism holds no requirements for being a Hindu, although many beliefs are accepted by nearly all Hindus.

I went to a college where there was a huge population of hindu students. I found them very intelligent and very fond of our culture. Everyone i came in contact with was very pleasant and friendly. I dated a hindu woman for years, and was engaged to her, her family and friends were very receptive of it. I have no issues with hindus, they are a hard working people.
