I had a a cat that got Giardia once. Giardia is a single cell microscopic parasite, Infection from giardia can occur from consuming contaminated food or water. It can also be transferred from animal or human feces
How do you get giardiasis and how is it spread?
The Giardia parasite lives in the intestine of infected humans or animals. Millions of germs can be released in a bowel movement from an infected human or animal. Giardia is found in soil, food, water, or surfaces that have been contaminated with the feces from infected humans or animals. You can become infected after accidentally swallowing the parasite; you cannot become infected through contact with blood. Giardia can be spread by:
Accidentally putting something into your mouth or swallowing something that has come into contact with feces of a person or animal infected with Giardia.
Swallowing recreational water contaminated with Giardia. Recreational water includes water in swimming pools, hot tubs, jacuzzis, fountains, lakes, rivers, springs, ponds, or streams that can be contaminated with sewage or feces from humans or animals.
Eating uncooked food contaminated with Giardia.
Accidentally swallowing Giardia picked up from surfaces (such as bathroom fixtures, changing tables, diaper pails, or toys) contaminated with feces from an infected person.

My puppies played in an area where a pond hadn't drained well. (muddy bottom) Two of them died..I was able to treat the others, but the two that died went quickly..like in about 3 hours..they were about 7 or 8 weeks old..Yes, the vet ran tests on their poop, and it was giardia..the treated ones recovered quickly..
Here is a veterinary site about it in dogs> http://www.vetinfo.com/dgiardia.html#giardia

My dog came back from vacation a couple years ago with it. Got it from the water hole that he swam in that was down stream from huge beaver dams!!!!!!! Beavers are a know carrier for it, that is why it is called "Beaver Fever".
Metronidazole clears it up pretty uneventfully...although it can take some time!!!!!!!
And be quite a mess!!!!
GOD!! Suzieshowdogz is FULL OF CRAP!!! It is really not that easy to get. It is not spread like the common cold!!!!!! You need to really come in contact with feces that is contaminated!!!!!!
Sometimes it is hard to detect in a fecal exam, so the poo may have to be sent out to a better lab for testing. Even if it is not detected, the vet may treat anyway!!!!!

Giardia is a bug, a parasite that you can catch just like the common cold.
Wash your hands thoroughly after going to the toilet, especially public loos.
It can cause diarrohea and vomiting in the human. It is not a dog specific disease/question, it is a human one.
Don't feel bad if you have it, your doctor is your first port of call for treatment.
