In my opinion the best car is all personal preference. You have to decide what you like in a vehicle. Some people like sport coupes, while others think it is annoying having two doors. Others like luxuries like BMWs or Mercedes (good luck finding a decent one under $7000). Depending on where you live some people want SUVs (snow). With gas prices going up, hybrids are becoming more and more popular.

There is no best. There is only the best at what you want the car to do. My Ford Focus, for example, has done a good job at economical transportation. Hasn't needed any repairs except a $30 parking brake, and gets decent mileage. But it isn't a good car if I wanted luxury, can't pull a heavy trailer, and it would do quite badly at drag racing.

2001 Nissan Altima
Just as reliable as Accord and Camry.... without the sticker shock. Plus it has a timing chain instead of belts like the Accord and Camry.
