Root beer is a fermented beverage made from a combination of vanilla, cherry tree bark, licorice root, sarsaparilla root, sassafras root bark (which is carcinogenic), nutmeg, anise, and molasses among other ingredients. Many local brands of root beer exist, and homemade root beer is made from concentrate or (rarely) from actual roots. Like alcoholic beer, root beer has a thick and foamy head when poured.
Root beer is a predominantly North American beverage, constituting about 3% of the American soft drink market.

Spunky answered it right but ROOT BEER came about because of the prohibition of alcohol. liquor smugglers had to manufacture something to put in bottles to be able to smuggle real beer out of plants. Root beer was placed in the same bottles and loaded onto the back of a truck so that If the police stopped them and opened bottles from the vehicle of the truck they were all filled With Root Beer and would not cause suspicion . Some root beer is still brewed in distilleries and common brew clubs in America today IBC beer being the best example. and it still has the appearance of being in beer bottles.

Hey, I won't tell you what it's made of cause "Spunky Roost" already told you, though I will tell you it is meant to be quite good for you, and I don't know about other places, but I live in Australia and we have a million different brands of it here. I don't know about other countries though, I do know it's in America like you said. It's not that exciting though, do you get Sarsaparilla? Have you tried it? Cause it tastes pretty much exactly the same. :]

it was originally sold in drug stores and by traveling salesmen as an elixier that could cure all kinds of things (this is a strong presence in american history in different ways). But this is no longer believed about it --but it is still a very popular drink.

I heard of someone from another country who hated it. To him it tasted like medicine. I like it myself. . . but when I heard that I tasted it and could see what he was talking about. . .
