It is just a conspiracy tribal leaders cooked up a long time ago to make sure that his followers would toe the line. People would have been more likely to fear enternal reprisal for their actions, and tribal leaders couldn't afford to kill of members of his tribe for not following "the laws".
Some people are still held under sway by this ancient flawed belief.

The punishment is never eternal. Even the magnitude of the same wrong is different for different people, depending upon the awareness and the standing of the persons committing that wrong.
A sin committed by a leader of people will draw more punishment for him, than a similar sin committed by a follower, because a leader 's faults stand out more and could be emulated by a larger group of people .

God can never be unfair, he will judge and punish based on the standing and the awareness of the sinner, and once the wrongdoing has been fully paid or atoned for, there will one day be redemption for all, for are not, all of us made in his own image?

It's just like people to blame someone else for their wrong doing. The fact is, It is not God who will deal out this punishment. God is a loving and a just God. It is ourselves who will deal it out, if we don't use our free will righteously. Once we die, we have sealed our place. We will know where we could be and what we could be doing had we just listened and obeyed. This is the torment, the eternal burning, the weeping and wailing and the gnashing of teeth. This is hell and you will never be able to move beyond it, because this life is the time to perform your labors, and you chose the path you took, Not God.

Because we dont see sin and the punishment for sin the way God does. You would think that it would be more logical to just die and cease to exist. But maybe God can't do that. He has His reasons for it and either you believe it or not. He said it would be this way and it is. Great question

Apparently (from previous answers) god expected us to use our Free Will and choose to do something wildly different from what we in fact do. And for this we are punished for all eternity.

From this we can see that our Merciful, Omniscient, and Omnipotent God is, in point of fact, unmerciful, inept, and impotent.

it sounds like you have met my mother-in-law....
therefore, I have NO fear of the afterlife....the decades with my mother-in-law have prepared me for hell..in fact...hell doesn't sound that bad ...compared to untold Thanksgiving dinners with her....
but I digress..
eternal punishment for a finite life????
God has a wicked sense of humor?

we humans have soul. though our bodies live for a time, the soul remains forever. whether in hell or in heaven. GOd is making ways to let all souls know him and that we might not be eternally punished anymore, or be saved from that punishment in hell. it's up to us whether we accept his gift or not.
