My good friend (who happens to be a youth leader) and I have taken to calling this book "Driving the Purpose Out of Life". It's like a poor re-hashing of every sermon you've ever heard, only watered down by the opinion of one man. They made us read it in Bible School, and nothing in it was new, inspiring, beautiful, or exciting. However, my mother and every other middle-aged modern-day Christian seems to think that this book is a 'revelation.' Has it really positively affected people, and how? and why? Or is it just a book for 'new' christians who won't be discouraged by the book's dullness, and will find it's contents new and exciting?

I think these guys are being a bit harsh. Its a good book. The bible is obviously better but PDL isnt supposed to be a bible replacement. I have personally seen PDL bring people back to god. The message in the book broke through to a couple people I know. He is not trying to bring glory to himself. He in my opinion was trying to get people to understand something by putting it into a different perspective. Is it wrong to do that? No. Not everyone has the ability to get what they need out of the Bible. Wise instruction from parents and other peers are often the only way to get through to others. I have a personal relationship with God and what I read in PDL wasnt to off the mark. People would do better in this world world if they took up some of the advice that he wrote in that book.

It's a "nice" book without a salvation message. It may help a believer, but it never promotes the idea of personal responsibility for sin.

If The Purpose Driven Life is in any way scriptural, then it is a redundant book.
Just read your Bible.

Rick Warren has taken the Bible and watered it down to nothingness. He has put his own spin on the Word, and his intent is to glorify himself. How can you fear the Lord if He is not to be glorified? He makes Jesus seem like one of our buddies. I know not one that this tragedy has helped. Zondervan, his printing company, the richest in the world, picked him up because they knew it would be yet another "self-help" idea. That is not what God is; He isn't to get things straightened in your life and drop like every other fad. When you have a personal relationship with Jesus, it is a lifelong committment that is fulfilling and everlasting. Rick Warren will have to answer to the many church homes he destroyed with his purpose driven trash. He will have to stand in judgement for the seeking people he has denied the Word by taking away what God meant to be heard.

A millionaire guy who runs Saddleback Church in California writes all kinds of books--mixed Theologies and all -- not to swift -- but they sell like crazy.

He has two out right now and if you go for either there are all kinds of guides and things one has to BUY to do the Course.

I'm not sure. I went to a service at a certain church in town. They spent the entire sunday service advertizing the book and then telling people they had it for sale in their book store. I was really offended and havent been back to that church since.

As you said it, a fad. But there's always a kernel of truth in it, something familiar that we've learned before in our youth... except that there are a few new examples, just examples to concretize the concept.

It helps keeping your perspective in check.I gave it to my dad to read.I know that if I hadn't read it before my brother died that I wouldn't of been so at peace. You see, us older people let our adult lives get us of track. We take our problems on by ourselves when we need to leave it in Gods hands."We are always where we are suppose to be in our lives",Thats the revelation we come to.
