How long should I wait to ask her out. we were on the same swim team last year as well she would talk to me and say things hope you do good on your next race or would crack little jokes does she like me

Never know till ya ask. You both gotta eat right? So ask her out to lunch on Saturday. If all goes well ask her to the movies- when? Right now ! (have a movie schedule in your car and catch a film after) That way you save money on the snacks at the movies too. Take her to coffee after to talk movie....and TA DAH!
Keep your "paws" to yourself! You are just test driving here, you need to wait a date or two. Compliment her, don't touch her yet. If your on the same "team" that could get bad, if its not right. ya know.
You have a new friend or maybe even a girlfriend, either way you have weeded out another one if it doesn't work out and you got to see a good movie.
Best part is that you have "herded her away from the girl flock" and spent time getting to know her without the gal chat between dates.
Followup on Sunday afternoon with a phone call (good or bad date) To say "Thanks for spending time with me, It was great to get to know you." BE BUSY- Don't chat....cool the jets, you will see her at school on Monday.
Always be "Cool" on the followup- if she didn't work out, she won't bad mouth a gentleman and hey, she may know "the girl" just right for you.
Trust me if your on the "SWIM" team, we girls will "free up" our schedule to watch your hot wet body in action. I dated one in highschool and he wasn't the one for me, but my bestfriend married him three years after highschool. We all were out one night, home from college and I made introductions...See.... it really happens.

It sounds like you guys were conversational allready. You're not going to look crazy if you look her up and see how she's doing. Maybe you could discretely find out where she's working/going to school/hanging out and find a reason to stop by and seem suprised to run into her. Failing that just call her and tell her "I've allways liked you. I want to take you out on a date next weekend."

If you do not have very good reasons that you will look crazy by talking to her, why not?
This is the first I have heard that one can look crazy just by talking to an ex-teammate!

Don't wait. Do it as soon as possible. Just walk right up to her and ask her, especially if all her friends are there.
