when design the software for managing the zooming operation in DV, I'd like to konw more about the algorithms available in research units and/or camera industry.

You can find a lot of them by web searching with queries like { auto-focus algorithm }. I put a few helpful links below under 'Sources". They are all based on image contrast. For example, you might measure the intensity (grey-level) difference between all pairs of adjacent pixels and then use some statistic of the distribution (histogram) of those differences (their absolute values). There are a lot of practical issues that may arise. For example, if noise enters the digital image "downstream" from the optical-image system, that can create problems. Another one occurs with the topography (height variation) of the scene being imaged is larger than the depth-of-focus of your optical-imaging systems.
