Let's start with metabolic rate. A person's basal metabolism represents the minimum energy expended to keep a resting, awake, body alive. The energy used in basal metabolism depends primarily on lean body mass. Other factors that influence your basal metabolism include: the amount of body surface (the greater the area, the greater the heat loss); gender (males average higher energy rates because of greater lean body mass); body temperature; thyroid hormone levels (higher levels increase metabolic rate); aspects of nervous system activity; age (metabolic rate falls as we age); nutritional state (eating less slows metabolic rate); pregnancy (metabolic rate increases); caffeine and tobacco use (metabolic rate increases).
About being underweight, sometimes being too thin requires medical intervention. A physician can rule out hormonal imbalances, depression, and other hidden diseases such as anorexia or bulimia. Risks associated with being too skinny include complications in surgery and slow recovery after illnesses.
You seem to be on the right track in terms of what you can do yourself to gain weight. The reason people suggest weight lifting is because it has a tendency to add muscle mass--pure weight, more so than other sports activities, which add some muscle at the same time as one is also burning off many calories. As far as food choices, try gradually increasing your consumption of energy-dense foods, especially those higher in vegetable fats. Italian cheeses, nuts, and granola are good kcalorie sources with low saturated fat content (read the label to make sure the product is high in mostly unsaturated fat). Dried fruit and bananas provide other high kcalorie fruit choices. If eaten at the end of a meal, they don't cause early satiety. Try replacing foods such as diet sodas with good energy sources, such as fruit juice.

Wow, 6,000 calories intake and yet you are still underweight by 30 lbs? Geeze fast metabolism eh...
Anyways, if you are really not restricted from eating junkies then perhaps you could try consuming them. They really make you grow big. Have tons of carbo for your food intake, eat a full course meal during breakfast, lunch, dinner and still have some junkies on the side.
Perhaps you could also try lessening your physical activities so as not to trigger your metabolism from burning your fat and calorie intake.
By the way, have you had yourself subjected for check-up? Your doctor should be able to give you the best diet plan to support your huge calorie intake requirement so you could gain back the appropriate weight for your height.
I wish I have that kind of metabolism so that I have good reasons to eat all the best foods there is and not complain of getting fat because I need to gain weight. I know this gets to be more of a problem for you rather than something to be desired for, but maybe you could try looking at it from a brighter side though.
All the nicest food servings to help you with your weight requirement, and still not get fat :).

Are you just eating and not working out. If you're eating 6000 cal a day and not gaining weight something is not right. I seriously hope you don't have an serious eating disorder. If you are over exercising then you need to stop completely until you put on the pounds and then reshape it after you put on about 40 pounds then start to workout again and redistribute the weight. Up you protein and get some rest. Also sounds like you are so stressed out about it that it has your metabolism really high and you burn everything and anything you eat. Calm down and start to think about the weight you want to gain. You have to focus on your positive self image. Imagine your metabolism slowing down. Imagine what you want to look like. Imagine how satisfied you will feel after you gain the weight. Slow everthing you do down to a comfortable relaxed pace and watch the pounds start to go up. You have too much going in your life. Stop look around and appreciate everything positive around you. That will definitely do the trick.

1. Go see your doctor. There has to be an underlying medical issue for your weight loss. You didn't say how much you presently weigh.
2. Start lifting weights to build definition.
3. Eat HEALTHY foods (not spam or fattening stuff) to put on weight evenly. You don't want a pot gut, do you? Lots of chicken and fish (for protein), a little pasta, some potatoes, and lots of fruit and veggies. In between meals, drink Slim Fast or Ensure. They have enough calories in them to count for a whole meal, plus Ensure contains vitamins. Drink them REALLY cold, or they don't taste good. They also come in puddings.
4. Have you considered that you might have a tapeworm? Not joking. If you really are trying to put on weight and you keep loosing it, a parasite could be for real.
5. I'm not trying to scare you, but there are lots of diseases that would make you loose weight. Aids/HIV, cancer, & hyperthyroidism just to name a couple. Again, go see your doctor.
6. If you take drugs, stop. Lots of them take off the weight as well.

I would suggest a trip to the doctor, if you are having difficulty maintaining a healthy weight even while eating then there could be a problem. There are a lot of weight gain supplements on the market as well, carbohydrate or protein drinks. But I still would suggest talking to a doctor to see if there is any physical problem (such as thyroid problems, diabetes, bacterial or viral infection, or Chrohn's disease). You may just have an extremely high metabolism, which a doctor can also help you with.

I suggest you consider going to the doctor and requesting a referral to a dietitian who will closely examine your food and drink intake over a period of time and monitor your weight. There may be a simple explanation, so don't worry about it unless you're not feeling well and you should attend the doctor in any case. Another aspect of this is that you may be working it off with exercise and daily work and your weight isn't that much of a problem. Another thing you might consider is stress. It will have this effect See the doctor first and have an examination.

Try drinking some Ensure throughout the day. Then eat your meals like normal. When my mom dropped a lot of weight her doctor told her to do that and she started putting the pounds back on. Also, try working out more. then you could gain muscle weight instead of fat.
(it doesn't just work for women either. My male friend did the same thing)

first i suggest you see your doctor to make sure you don't have a thyroid or other problem with your health. then, get a nutritional assessment to really calculate how much your body needs to maintain and gain weight. don't just fill up on junk foods because you'll end up more unhealthy than you would be by being underweight. whey protein is good and doens't taste as bad as soy for making shakes. also, if you aren't already, do weight training to gain healthy weight in the form of muscle.

My goodness no need for the calorie counter. Just eat all the food you need that you think will gain you 30 pounds or more of weight. Go on an eating binge and enjoy.

It doesn't matter how many calories your intake is per day if it isn't good calories. Try things like Carnation Instant Breakfast, P-nut butter, Honey, etc. Things that are actually good for you. Empty calories are a waste of time. There are also drink mixes from GNC that will help that you can make into shakes. (they might taste nasty, but they can improve your weight)
