What do you think you're exposed to when you have X-Rays?

It depends on how much radiation you were exposed to, and what kind. Sunlight, heat lamps,
ultraviolet light, etc. are all electromagnetic
radiation. Presumably what you meant is nuclear
radiation, since you mention a radioactive element.
Again it depends on how much. Everyone is being
constantly exposed to a low level of radiation from
cosmic rays, no serious damage from this. In
fact there is some evidence that at least some
kinds of organisms are healthier when exposed to
a little radiation than if they receive none at all.
Too much is, of course, fatal.

1. Be sure to wash the area that was exposed so that continuing exposure does not occur. (assuming you handled something raidoactve)

2. Remove any clothing that may have been contaminated. Place this clothing in a bag and keep it away from people.

3. Seek medical help/advice right away. There are certain types of radiation that are not a problem and others that can be serious right away. Also, there are medications available for certain types of exposure.

4. We are all subject to a certain level of radiation every day, so your body has ways of repairing itself within reason. Many people survived our attacks on Japan. Don't panic, get help right away.

You're exposed to it everyday, It's called the "SUN", it's the largest nuclear reactor in the universe. I once had "OVEREXPOSURE" to UV rays that bounced of a fiberglass work table in a lab under a UV lamp while transferring cultures using "Sterile technique". I left it on too long (like 1 hour, ya only supposed to use it a few minutes to sterilize the flasks) when I got home, I looked as if I had been sunburned badly. I woke up that night with very painful eyes, (like steel wool in them feeling), When I woke up the next day, the pain and irritation were gone, I went to the doctor the next day, and he kept asking me if I was a welder, and was working without glasses, I kept saying "NO" but, he didn't believe me, it was very scary, I was glad to be OK.

Assuming you are not talking about some harmless, low-rad watch-dial paint or the like, the answer is to get to a doctor. Don't wait for the 3 days you have set for this question. Do it now. Drive to the emergency room if necessary.

If you have a sample or *know* what the substance is, that might help.

If you feel you must wait, make sure the exposure is not ongoing; is it on your clothes? In your hair? In your lungs?

Good luck!

Depends on the type, but iodine asap to protect your thyroid. Beyond that, all you can do is treat the symptoms (again, depends on the type of exposure) and hope you live long enough to survive the short-term effects.

iodine pills I think? A friend of mine lives a few miles from Indian point and I think after 9/11 they were given iodine pills in case of an 'accident'
