Patients who use nicotine replacement therapy (patch, pill, inhaler, lozenges, etc.) experience less weight gain than those who quit cold turkey.

Smoking decreases the oxygen level in your blood. Easy to understand as you're sucking smoke into your lungs instead of air. This make your heart pump faster to try to bring what little oxygen you do get to your tissue. When your heart pumps faster it burns more energy. You stop smoking and your heart pumps at a steady/normal rate. This is why it's almost impossible for people to not gain weight when they quit.

You should know, understand, and accept that a little weight gain (around 10 lbs.) is normal and usually comes off without any dieting, or increase in exercise, within a year of quitting. It should be thought of as part of the healing process. Most people wouldn't complain about having to wear a cast to help a broken bone heal. Think of the fat as part of what your body needs to do to heal from all the years of smoking.

Great job for stopping smoking! No small feat. How to lose weight and make the most of your accomplishment? Get moving. Get involved in something. If you are 'snacking' or eating all of the time then you are likely around food too much and either idle or eating on the go. Leave food to the kitchen, not couch or car and you'll find you aren't creating so much opportunity to eat beyond hunger. Eating is an extracurricluar habit for most people. Replace it by going to the park, beach or something outdoors that you enjoy. Best wishes and again, you obviously have the willpower to do anything you want so just decide and do it.

Eat a carrot every urge.

Drink loads of water.

Above all... Research breathing exercises. There are breath control methods like in YOGA where you can actually speed up your metabolism using your breath. And... filling your body with Oxygen is a great way to fill the craving and get a natural high.

Done it. Loved it. And I was successfull.

Five extra pounds is not as unhealthy as the crap that's in cigarettes. In time it comes off again anyways - which for some reason nobody ever mentions.
Stock up on gum instead of chewing candies etc. And exercise cravings away. You'll be fine.

Do Not Use Food As A Smoking Substitute. Try sugarless gum and long walks instead.

Exercise constantly and watch how you eat. Don't eat after 6pm. And try going to bed early. I'm going thru the same thing right now. That is what works for me. Good luck.

P.S.- try eating alot of baked fish and chicken. Try eating plain tuna as well. With plenty of fruits, vegetables, and drinking plenty of water.

Sunflower Seeds.

Buy a pack of sunflower seeds in substitution for your pack of cigarettes. Then when you get a craving tackle the sunflower seeds, they keep you busy, have no calories, and are good for you.

Pick up a new active hobby; like racket ball, tennis, running, volley ball, swimming, or anything just to get you moving and breathing deep.
