my boyfriend thinks he might have crohn's disease. His father has it and is basically dying at age 44. my boyfriend is 21, and has all the symptoms of it. The thing is he doesn't have insurance right now. (he's out of work from a broken collar bone...just keeps getting worse.) We like in Kansas City...is there anyone that can help or anything we can do for it that won't cost a fortune? Please let me know...before it gets worse.

Do you have in Kansas City a Public Hospital which will care for patients on a sliding scale or provide service free if you have no income? They should have social workers there to take medical assistance applications.

If not, go to the public library or the health food store and get some books on Crohn's disease which will give advice. People with Crohn's disease need dietary guidlines because they have to avoid certain foods.

Sorry to hear. However, I should point out that Crohn's is not a fatal disease, so I find it unlikely your boyfriend's father is dying from it. As for your boyfriend, if he has the symptoms of Crohn's, especially bloody stool, you should schedule an appointment with a gastroentorologist (and pay for the office visit). Explain the situation to them. They may be willing to prescribe a first line medication without doing a colonoscopy or other tests (which are expensive). Also, regarding diet, you may want to try the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which has been helpful to some Crohn's sufferers. The book/website to check out is called "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" by Elaine Gottschall. Good luck.

hey girl. I'm sorry to hear about your boyfriend. i was diagnosed with crohn at the age of 21 too, and you can say anything you want about it, but at the end of the day, it sucks. i don't know what your boyfriend can do about medical insurance, but i wanted you to tell him that he has to take care of himself. i know that it's rough, especially at the beginning, but he is not alone. here is the link for the American foundation for crohn and colitis. http://www.ccfa.org/

he can contact them for support, and advice. i hope he will feel good soon, and that he will be smart and take care of himself now, before it gets any worse. in this disease there's a huge amount of importance for catching infections while they are still small.

best of wishes,

david.

Crohn’s disease causes inflammation in the small intestine. Crohn’s disease usually occurs in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum, but it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected organ.

If he's out of work and doesnt have a lot of assets, he may be able to get Medicare or some other assistance from the Department of Health and Social Services.
