Well the portuguese battery operated boyfriend sounded like a close winner but I'd like to think the rechargeable digital (change to any race button) Chunk of Hunk life size with blow up width/girth option would be the one I'd buy her! LOL LOL LOL
Hey batteries are expensive and for whichever amount of time and use it could be a costly investment for her....give her a break. ROFL
A lot has to do whether you are really close and share everything together or whether there is one of those "know your place and don't step out of it" things going on. Would buying her something waaaaay off the wall make her laugh or throw her in a tizzy? When ya figure out that one then it's going to be easy.
If your not really sure and don't have much money to spend on a gift, I'd consider the home made "Daughter Do's" gift book might be just the thing.
It's a book of anywhere between 5 - 10 blank "Daughter Do" ____________ that she has all year to use (or 60 or 90 days depending on your willingness to jump). You could put some restrictions on use: must give at least 48 hours notice prior to use unless in an emergency then its not even necessary to use one as you'd be there no matter what the case. Hey Mom's also come first still today, at least that's how I wish it were for me.
A Daughter/Mother trip also sounds good especially if your wanting to spend some individual quality time all to yourself with her. As time passes to quickly maybe it's time for you to make some extra special memories for the two of you to recall later down the road when reminiscing is so much better. Ya gotta make those memories happen or your not going to have anything to reminisce about.
.............think about it...............

Now that my mother is getting older, and has every single thing she would ever need, and many things that she doesn't, I try to give her the gift of TIME. One year, I got theater tickets and treated her to a nice lunch and a matinee of a play. Or since your mom loves to garden, many areas have clubs that meet, have luncheons or teas while listening to speakers on their particular specialty. The same goes for cooking classes, or poetry readings, or any subject that she would enjoy you to share with her. An adult day or evening out is treasured for a long time after flowers have faded or a sweater is worn out.

Fix her up a basket with different type of flower seeds and flowering hand tools a couple of candles that have a flower scent and maybe a pad to kneel down on when she works in the garden a couple of small flower pots that may be painted up pretty or you could paint her name on, Just fix a basket with assorted gifts like the ones I mentioned and I'm sure she would love it..

Your family should get together and cook some old portuguese dishes. Invite some other portuguese family and friends and enjoy with conversation and old pictures from her younger years.

I find the best gifts are always the ones you make. For example, I took a picture of my father and wrote a poem and had them both plaqued together. Another gift idea is taking something old and re-finishing it into better condition....whatever you do, it is not the gift but the thoughtfulness of the gift.......good luck.

You could buy her a nice bird bath or hummingbird feeder for her garden, or different flowers that attract butterflies

Get her really nice cooking tools and/or gadgets.
Or if you now your mom would like to try cooking new things, try getting her a tangine. They look great if you cook with it or just as shelf decorations.
check 'em out: http://surlatable.com/common/google/search.cfm?query=tagine%20OR%20tagines&orig=tangine&msg=3
