It's not a joke or a riddle. I was broiling some food tonight and reflecting on how I always broil with the oven door open, because that's how I learned to do it from my dad. But why? Is it so you can see the food better? Does it cook better somehow? Does everyone do it this way or are my dad and I the only ones?

I wasn't broiling anything exciting. I was just toasting a bagel. (It was a mini-bagel which was too small for the toaster.)

I do it like that too and there must be a good reason. One reason may be that broiling cooks pretty fast and you want to keep the door open so as not to forget about the food.

Usually when you broil something, you want it to be crunchy or hard...

So if you open the door, you can keep the temperature from getting high in the oven. Usually my oven turns automatically to bake when the temperatures during broil get too high.

Hope this makes sense...

It really depends on your oven. I you have a good model that has better temperature adjustment than older models, you could probably leave the door closed. With an older or gas oven you are probably better off with the door open. My Mom always broiled with the door open so she wouldn't forget and burn dinner.

well your oven has a thermostat you know that and if you closed the door when the oven reached 500 degrees it would turn off and just bake the meat when the door is open the heat gets out so it stay on ok be sure to use your fan or you will set off the smoke alarm what you haven't changed the battery shame

It keeps the temperature from getting too high. it's good especially if you're broiling something thick. You're doing fine! Just don't let the cat crawl in.

What are you making in there? Now I'm curious.

Smoke is the main reason..also to keep a close eye on the food. Closed door, is easy to forget. There really is some psychology to this!

That is the way I was taught too. I have tried it with the door closed, but it creates too much smoke and my smoke alarm goes off. The open door helps and I don't have that problem anymore.
