Check with your local jurisdictons. My guess is you have some stuff to explain. Drugs? Probably not hire you, let you be around drugs at lab. Otherwise probably whatever the requirements are for any other clerical position. Persons assigned to doing this work are mostly clerical employees who also must testify in court. What would a defense attorney make of your testimony if you admit to cocaine use and its a cocaine case? hmmmmmmmmm.

I don't know what a criminalist is, but for other careers in law enforcement criminal convictions of any kind are fowned upon. However, if your crime and conviction happened more than 10 years ago or was not a violent sort of crime you may still be ok. The most important thing is to be completely up front about it. Sometimes the kid who was arrested and convicted of DUI when he was 18 and learned from his mistake makes the best canidate for a job in law enforcement.

Polygraphs or voice stress tests are required for nearly all law enforcement positions. Even dispatchers have to take them. It really depends on what the misdemeanor was. Drugs or theft, and you may have a problem.

It is usually the same for cops, in my city the criminalists are certified cops and have to go to the same academy and conditions as other cops.
A misdemeanor does not usually disqualify. Remember, the candidates you are competing against are no more angels than you. I had to admit to smoking pot as a teenager, a lot of guys did.

Generally as long as it didn't involve a crime of moral turpitude. Polygraph requirements vary.
