Root beer is the only soft drink that is Brewed in the same process that beer is. The only difference is that is is not alcoholic.
Root beer was mad during the Prohibition of alcohol to lure the police away from the illegal transport of beer. cases were loaded onto the back of a truck with the beer behind it. That way the police assumed that the shipment was all harmless.
Root beer to this day is still brewed and some companies till bottle it in bottles similar to beer bottles....IBC for example.
So the process for brewing makes it sweeter and more addictive.

Maybe it's just because you like it so much. I have root beer every once in a while, but I don't find it very addictive. It's not something I feel I really need to drink, just if I'm in the mood for it.

I think Mt Dew is more addicting, but only because of the caffeine. Maybe it is just the unique taste that you are hooked on. I know my Dad is a SERIOUS Diet Coke addict.
