Turn the face of the alam clock away from you so that you don't stare at it. Don't read or watch T.V. in bed, the bedroom needs to be kept a place of rest. Make sure you have nice heavy curtains on your windows to block out lights. Make sure you are not having caffine in the afternoon as this can effect your sleep as well. A lot of this may be related to the anxiety of not being able to get to sleep and you mostly will only resolve this by getting yourself into a routine. If you do wake up, it is best to get out of bed for a while have a drink, go to the bathroom rather than just lay in bed. This way you will have a fresh start when you hop back into bed.

If the pills you were taking were from the Valium family (they all end in ...pam) Diazepam = Valium, then it is no wonder you felt drowsy the next day. This family of drugs actually have a negative effect on sleep.
You do not get enough REM or Delta sleep (Deep sleep where your body is renewed) REM = Rapid Eye Movement - when we dream and restore psychologically.
To summarize they throw normal sleep architecture out of whack. The ratio of the different sleep stages is thrown off.

There are specific meds available for short term use which help to normalize sleep architecture - Imovane is the most widely used and available in 5mg and not 7.5mg which can be too much.

That aside, I like to read a novel and it helps me to drift off. TV should not be in the bedroom and regular bedtime routine. Get yourself to associate your bedroom as a place to sleep only.

Sounds like a bit of Sleep Apnea is starting to affect ur normal sleep patterns the best way to find out for sure is to visit a sleep lab and ask them to test for sleep apnea or be referred to one by ur family Dr. A C-PAP machine has helped me immensely to get a great nights sleep and feel much better during my waking hrs.

try not to stress about it. go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning - at least don't vary by more than one hour. Don't read or watch tv in bed. and don't eat for at least 2 hours before sleeping. No alcohol before bed either.

That's the only advice I know other than the pills. Good luck.

Try a warm bath with lavender oil, and a cup of chamomile tea.

The other thing that works, for me, is to pop the movie Gladiator into the VCR. I haven't stayed awake to see that thing all the way through, ever. ; )
