My son has to have his hair cut almost on a 2 week basis. It grows straight up. Have to gel it down but by the end of the day its sticking straight up. Would like to grow it out maybe but can't seem to make it lay down. Any shampoos to help? Or is there a way to cut it or shave it to make it grow to lay down? Thanks.

Most likely the only alternative there is to try to grow it out. Do the hair grow straight up all over the head or only in certain places? If all over the head, then probably cutting them very short on the back of the head and above the ears, and spiking them up on the top with a sculpting cream or pomade such as Redken or Bad Head might look really good. Same if the hair grow straight up only in certain places. In any case, it will be easier and more money saving just to accept the hair as it is and work from there. Applying the sculpting cream or pomade will make the hair more manageable and controllable, and allow to stylishly spike and "mess" the hair up in a very appealing way.

I've seen this quite a bit in my salon. Would he be opposed to wearing it up in chunky little spikes? It will be the best and it's following with the natural growth pattern. If the spikes are out, definitely try to grow it out and use the weight with the combo of the products to hold it down.
When he shampoos, he should also condition it since this softens the cuticle making it pliable. I believe the smooth down shampoo + conditioner by Redken would be awesome. However, I'm still not opposed to combining that shampoo with Joico's ICE Spiker. It's hold is (wicked) great. If you'd like to stay in the Redken line, they also have Concrete and others. I'm a cosmetologist for 12 years and would be happy to share some more advice. :o)

I hope a hair stylist will see your question. As you probably already know, there are many, many products on the market to help with all types of hair difficulties. Have you already talked to your son's barber/stylist?

It may be better just to let it grow longer, then the weight of the hair would weigh it down.
