It's not the wheel base, it's the center of gravity. Lengthening a high center of gravity vehicle would probably make the problem worse, not better!

Jeep Wranglers use a suspension system that is about 60 years old. This further worsens the problem.

You're very right about inexperience. They learn to drive in a regular car and have no clue about the relative instability of SUVs and don't bother to read the owner's manual or otherwise get educated.

Someone needs to do some homework before assuming a Jeep has a high rollover rate. In the most recent tests I could find(2006), The Nissan Xterra and Chevy Avalanche were the worst performers. They were followed by Jeep Liberty, Hummer H3 and Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon. In older models, the Suzuki Samarai and Ford Bronco II were at the bottom of the list. A Jeep Wrangler/CJ has never made the "worst list" for rollover rate. ANY vehicle has the potential to roll if the driver chooses to drive in a manner that does not suit the vehicle. Jeeps have a reputation for high rollover rate beacause there's nothing to compare it too. By the way, look at the specs on the 2007 Wranglers. They have a longer wheelbase and a wider track.

Jeep Wheel Base

I have a TJ and they are much wider than the CJ's of old. BTW, it's called "track", not wheelbase. Wheelbase is the distance between the center of the front wheel to the center of the rear wheel. I assmume you mean maker the car wider, not longer. You can add a few inches by getting wheel spacers and maybe wide tires.

Try going to Jeep 101, which is a class on how to use your Jeep. Check with your local dealer or maybe your local Jeep club.

I've had 4 Jeeps, 1 Bravada, 1 Blazer, 2 Broncos, 1 Dodge Ram and 1 International Scout. I flipped the Scout in 1974 and learned my lesson and never flipped one again.

id have to go with jeepster420 the wrangler just has that tarnished name of being a roll over vehicle. i own one and let me tell you i feel less body roll in my jeep then i do in most other suvs. however jeep is redoing the tj for 07. its an all new jeep its 5 inches wider and a little bit longer which to the people who think in numbers and not by going out and driving the vehicle thats supposed to make it more road friendly by not flipping over which it never did in the first place.

Jeep Wranglers are not sports cars and aren't meant to be driven like them. True a Jeep does not handle like a regular car but it is not "flip prone" unless it is driven stupidly.
The TJ Wrangler 97-06 does not have a sixty year old suspension design. It was changed to coil springs in 97.
Driven properly it is amazing what a stock Jeep can do offroad. This is what it was designed for, not to drive fast on the street.

Natural selection.

Those of us who have a brain know how to treat our Wranglers with respect.

To bostonianinmo - *widening* the wheelbase would increase stability in a Wrangler, which is what the question was about. Plus, the Wrangler put in a new suspension system as of 1997, changing the leaf springs over to coils front and back.

Jeep Tj Wheelbase

They have done something about it. The Wranglers are wider than the CJs and the suspension is a lot more forgiving than the older style. If people are having a lot of problems with them tipping over then maybe they need to learn how to drive correctly.

no no i own a wrangler they are not prone to flip;ping since they went to a spring configuration instead of leafs because of the new suspension setup they dont flip nearly 1/10 as much if ur able to get them too the springs absorb the turns better leafs are more ridgid so they bend in easier and the center of gravity will flip when they doo
