Dark chocolate, especially baking chocolate is very lethal to dogs. Milk chocolate is less so, but can still be damaging. The size of the dog plays a part as well. Had a German Shepherd who ate 18 candy bars (meant for a candy drive) & only had diarrhea for a while -that much chocolate (even milk chocolate) would have killed a smaller dog. Every dog I've owned has eaten chocolate at some point & none has died from it, but I wouldn't feed a dog large amounts of chocolate or even a small amount of very strong dark chocolate.

Yes.. chocolate causes diarrhea and vomiting immediately and can kill a poor animal.

The lethal dosage of theobromine in dogs is between 250 and 500 mgs/kg, or about 2/3 to 1 1/3 of baking chocolate for every 2.2 pounds of body weight. However, serious non-fatal poisonings have been reported in dogs after eating smaller amounts

It is particularly toxic to dogs--especially the very dark, intense kind. That is usually used in cooking and would be up in a cupboard somewhere not easily accessible to a dog.

Chocolate is also toxic to cats and they don't tend to eat enough of it to do real damage. Dogs, however, are notorious for eating anything, even rocks, in great quantities. They just don't seem to know when to stop.

Certainly if someone gets a box of chocolates for a present you need to make sure the dog can't get at it.

It is true - it can be deadly in large doses, but the deadly dose depends on the size of your dog. If you are concerned -- KEEP THE CHOCOLATE OUT OF THE DOG'S REACH and talk to your vet to find out what a lethal dose would be. I bet you there is probably at least one web site out there that already has some information about this. Did you even bother to look?

They need a lot to even hurt them and the first thing they do is vomit it back up before it hurts them.
The rule of thumb is 1 ounce of chocolate per 1 pound of dog is dangerous. That is dark chocolate. Milk and semi-sweet chocolate is less dangerous.
So, a 15 pound dog needs to eat 15 ounces of chocolate. That is almost one pound. What are the odds that a dog that size can eat one pound of anything, much less chocolate.
A German Shepard needs to eat a solid chocolate bar the size of a large pizza box to even get dizzy. He will puke long before he even gets close.
So, it is possible, but VERY rare. Trust me, I work at a vet clinic and this comes up a lot.

I have also heard that chocolate is really bad for dogs. But I don't think that my fiance's dog has heard this rumour as he loves the stuff. So as far as my personal experience goes I have to say that it will not. Don't take my word for it though as I am not a vet, you'd be best to ask one of them to feel more secure in the answer.

Chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. It takes, on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. On average, milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz., semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz., and baker's chocolate 390mg/oz. Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as:
1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate
1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate
1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate.

So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems.

Yes! My friends toy poodle actually died from eating a whole bowl of peanut butter cups. The chocolate overdose caused her kidneys to shut down and her stomach to ulcerate. A small amount now and then won't kill them, but try to keep it away. Also, grapes, peanuts and raisins are harmful, too. And a Swifter mop can be fatal. So keep your pets safe!

I know that chocolate is bad for dogs I don't know how much a dog would have to eat to kill it, I guess it would depend on the size of the dog.
