Is this a common response from innocent people, or is an indication that they have something to hide?

There are few things more dreadful than dealing with a man who knows he is going under, in his own eyes, and in the eyes of others. Nothing can help that man. What is left of that man flees from what is left of human attention.

Have you ever been questioned by the police? They are very very mean. They know exactly what to say to get to you. Even if you are not guilty they just have a way of twisting your words around. I was questioned before by two different police. One was a woman and she was suprisingly nice, but she wasn't after me she was out to get my fiancee. I don't remember if I cried, I probley did, and if I did cry it was because I just had to watch my fiancee being taken away in hand cuffs, for something that he didn't do. Luckily though the woman was really nice to me and not like the typical questioning. Now another cop was questioning me off record and he was a complete jerk, a damn crooked cop too, but I don't think I cried, but if I did it was because I was sooo mad. He was such jerk. But I don't know those are different reasons why people cry. Nerves, I was nervous, scared I'd say the wrong thing and it would affect my fiancee, I'm sure some cry from guilt. But whatever those detectives can be just hateful and that is very stressful.

It's a result from the "fight or flight" reaction still embedded in many people. Their ethics tell them fighting would not be a wise decision and driving/running off would not work either. Therefore adrenaline gives way to anxiety, which causes the uncontrollable reaction. It's not that they're guilty, depressed, or trying to get out of trouble (though, of course, for some it is and they're just hoping on playing the cop's emotions to get out of a ticket/trip to court and jail), for some people it's just a thing their body does no matter how calm they actually are.

A lot of things make people cry. Guilt or shame is a possibility. Sometimes people are relieved to finally get something off their chest and cry from the relief. Some people cry because they are frustrated or angry (perhaps because they feel falsely accused. I am a police officer. If I interviewed a person and they began to cry, I know it could mean a lot of things other than guilt.

They are trying to get some sympathy and yes, as stated above, appear innocent. People are more likely to cry if they are guilty, in my opinion, because there's that chance of them getting locked up or being punished in another way for what they did "wrong."

1. Fear

2. Stress

3. Upset because you are in trouble.

4. Feelings of powerlessness

5. Thoughts of the punishment... for example, a ticket = your car insurance skyrockets for 3 years.

Because they are under a lot of stress. For whatever reason, whether they are guilty or not, they are being questioned by the law enforcement. It is a serious thing. It doesn't necessarily mean if they are guilty though.

It depends on the police's interrogation tactic and the nature of the person. If a person is sensitive, he or she might cry easily or if the policeman is mean or yelling then they might cry at the aggression.
