My new digital camera has a sd card formatting feature. Is it necessary to format the card before using? I have a Canon Powershot A540.

It is not necessary, but it is recommended to format any digital media in the camera it will be used in. This ensures the camera will be able to properly read and write data to the memory card.

If it is new, NO. No need for formatting.

I would let the camera do it for you but I have two cards and I formated one with my computer and I can't tell the dif. When I put the card in the cam it auto creates the folders and takes care of it for me.

Hi, I recommand you to try google picasa.

picasa is a Google's photo software. It's what should've come with your camera.

It can Edit , organise and Share you picture and small video flips.

It's very easy to use and is free, just like Google

Download it free in here:

Good Luck!
