From the Catholic Encyclopedia:
In Scripture there is as yet no single term by which the Three Divine Persons are denoted together. The word trias (of which the Latin trinitas is a translation) is first found in Theophilus of Antioch about A.D. 180. He speaks of "the Trinity of God [the Father], His Word and His Wisdom ("Ad. Autol.", II, 15). The term may, of course, have been in use before his time. Afterwards it appears in its Latin form of trinitas in Tertullian ("De pud." c. xxi). In the next century the word is in general use. It is found in many passages of Origen ("In Ps. xvii", 15). The first creed in which it appears is that of Origen's pupil, Gregory Thaumaturgus. In his Ekthesis tes pisteos composed between 260 and 270, he writes:

There is therefore nothing created, nothing subject to another in the Trinity: nor is there anything that has been added as though it once had not existed, but had entered afterwards: therefore the Father has never been without the Son, nor the Son without the Spirit: and this same Trinity is immutable and unalterable forever (P. G., X, 986).

;-D Forgive them. They know not what they do.

Most date the beginnings of the doctrine of the Trinity to The Council of Nicea in 325 AD. This is the standard answer and will probably suffice for your project.

However, similar statements preceded it. These include those written by Lucian of Antioch (300 AD), Gregory Thaumaturgus, of Neo Caesarea (270 AD), Origen of Alexandria (230 AD), Turtullian (200 AD), and Ignatius (107 AD).

The first use of the word "Trinity" was by Theophilus around 170 AD.

I believe the idea of the trinity was first brought up at the Council of Nicea, that was convened by Constanine, the Roman Emporer.

At the time, there were several Christian congregations - and unfortunately, although they all believed in Jesus, differences had began to develop between their belief systems.

Constantine, even though he was a pagan sun worshiper, decided to convene the council so they could come to an agreement as to what to believe. I believe that is where the idea of the trinity first came around.

I do not know the year it predates christianity. It was the Celtic peoples triple obsession which had a determining effect on the eventual doctrine of the Trinity, in the fourth century. The triple knot is found on artifacts, shrines, crosses and manuscripts of the Celtic peoples, making it one of the most recognizable of Celtic symbols. The Triple goddess -Maiden, Mother, Crone being one of our favorites. A symbol to remind us daily of the importance in the Trinity of soul, heart and mind.

People need to quit thumping there bible it stands for many religions.

The fish isn't even from christianity also It was first found in egypt and in paganism. Christians adopted it when they were not allowed to wroship in the open in rome when they first meet somebody and they did not know there religion they would draw half of the fish with there foot in the sand. If the other person was christian he would finish it.

The Bible clearly and unequivocally talks of Jesus, God trhe Father and the Holy Spirit each as God. Studies are readily available on the web. But to answer your question:

"Consequently one now began to talk of a divine 'Trinity'. In the Nicene Confession-formula of A.D. 325 this concept had been, significantly, lacking. 'Trinitas'- Trias did not signify a kind of 'unity of three', but simply 'three-ness'. In the adoption of this concept the Gnosticising tendency also showed itself For the ' Trias' -'Trinitas' was first adopted as a doctrinal terminus technicus in the period of the Church's controversy with Gnosticism. As a doctrinal concept, 'trinitas' was of Gnostic origin. Trias - trinitas was one of a number of numerical-concepts employed in Gnostic pleroma speculation, where there was, with the trias, a dyas, tetras, hexas, an ogdoas, dekas, and dodekas. The Valentinian Gnostic had been, accordingly, so far as the existing sources permit us to know, the first Christian theologian to designate the Father, Son and Spirit specifically as a Trias.
