Questioner: God bless you and guide you on your journey to seek the truth. I do not know anywhere in the bible where Jesus or any of the Apostles condened slavery. I know Paul the Apostle encouraged a Christian who was a slve to be loyal to his master and to trust God. But that is not condoning slavery.

Yep! I'm afraid so. Look up this example "Luke, Chapter 7, verse 2:" Not one word from JC to the Roman about the evils of slavery. He is perfectly comfortable with the concept, that is if you believe this actually happened. Slavery, was an everyday fact of life in ancient times. It was a fact of life in this country, a short 150 years ago. Our repulsion with slavery, is a very modern concept. Jesus and his contemporaries were hardly modern thinkers. I've read the Bible several times, and I can't recall even one place where Jesus "condoned" slavery. He merely mentioned it in a metaphorical way, to help the people around Him understand the power of sin in their lives.

Using a locally-existing cultural fact as a metaphor doesn't constitute a blanket endorsement, unless the metaphor is a positive one. Jesus said we were "slaves of sin" and that He had come to "set us free". I don't consider that a blanket endorsement of slavery at all! Seems more an offering of freedom to me...

I don't believe that Jesus condoned slavery (endorsed slavery). He did make comments regarding servants (slaves) because they were a part of their culture -- but that is not the same thing.

Jesus clearly valued freedom above slavery; He said, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free." And at other times He told the Jewish leaders that they were "slaves" (to sin). Now He was talking about spiritual freedom and spiritual slavery, but the principle remains the same: freedom is preferable to slavery.

Gal 3:28 There is no Jew or Greek. There is no slave or free person. There is no male or female. Because you belong to Christ Jesus, you are all one.

Paul often refers to himself as a slave of Jesus, but that is BY HIS CHOICE.
