Best Wishes...

every 6 or so weeks, depending on how fast your har grows. i have shoulder length hair that i am trying to grow out. i used to have hip length hair that i had trimed at least once a month, because of the dead weight. and i only have what evr needs to be off, off, 1/4 inch or more. just enough to give it bounce and life again.

every 4-6 weeks and 1/4in to 1/2in if you are trying to grow out... hair grows at about 1/2 inch a month so to keep it from breaking off keep it trimmed

I cut my hair once a year... but by the time I trim, (usually 3 inches), my ends look terrible!! I have hair down to the middle-ish/bottom of my back.

h!!!. I'm a hairstylist....so I WILL TELL YOU!!!!!
If you are going to grow it out, have any split ends that appear trimmed off immediately....maybe go in every 6-8 weeks and have a TRUSTED stylist (that won't "trim" every inch you've managed to grow out off) to check your ends to see what is needing trimmed. If you let the splits remain on your hair...they travel up the hair shaft, and sure....you'll grow longer hair, but it will look like a haystack!( like SO MANY people's hair !!! Not good!!!
Your hair's "growth rate" will be as follows:
( varies w/ some people's body chemistry):
(using healthy diet & decent products)
1/4 - 1/2 - 1 inch monthly
(using poor diet & strong harsh products)
0 - 1/8 - 1/4 inch monthly
__________________________________________
If you eat right, avoid fast food (that has NO vitamins) and eat very healthy, not only will your hair grow faster, but it will be shiny, strong, resilient and lustrous!!!-combined with hair care products that are decent, not garbage. (Good news ahead!!!) But first......DO NOT....DO NOT!!!!!!.....use cheap grocery store products on your growing out hair...they have detergent comparible to to what is in laundry soap...dishsoap.....very harsh cleansing agents. It will destroy the hair's cuticle eventually, also being affected more quickly by the amount of times you wash it weekly, sun exposure, chlorine exposure (swimming)(.......coat with a heavy conditioner before swimming.-protects from chlorine absorption into the hair shaft, and protects from sun damage)
You can find better products than the grocery store carries but avoid having to pay prices that have been marked up 3 TIMES what the salon's owner paid for the product. (I'm a stylist....... and I am one who will tell you salon's product prices are a rip off!!!!) If they have $21.95 marked on the bottle, they paid LESS THAN HALF that amount, I promise you!!!!! JERKS!!!!! Go to Sally Beauty Supply....open to the public for anything in there EXCEPT perms. You can even purchase hair color there-MUCH BETTER FOR YOUR HAIR THAN THE JUNK AT THE GROCERY STORE!
They have generics of the "Name brand rip offs" at the salon that contain the EXACT INGREDIENT!!!!-compare the bottles ingredients with the "real" stuff....it's amazing!
Sally's has products that may only cost as little as the more expensive stuff the grocery store offers for $6.99, but your getting a $2.00 product at the store, and paying $6.99. you're getting a $6.99 shampoo at Sally's and only paying $6.99 for it! And the salons charge you $14.00- $20.00 for it. They get some of their retail products at Sally Beauty Supply, Barnum's, S & S Beauty supply stores for a price and then go mark it up for profit at their salon. Yes, that's business, but I'm trying to save you some $$$$$$$ !!!!!!!
If you are trying to maintain your length (depending on which growth rate your hair follows) you need to have what amount of hair length that grew out since the day you got it cut last cut off the ends. (whether it's been 2 weeks or 2 months!!!)
Now you owe me $175.00 for my HUGE consultation!!!! Just kidding.......no one else's answers were too helpful, so take my advice!!!!! I wouldn't spend all this time if it was a crock of '!@#$%^&*"!!!!!!!!!
Good luck in your hairy future!!!!
