Here is the customs website, tells you what you need to know.
The duty on tobacco and alcohol can be quite steep, so I strongly recommend you stay within the duty free guidelines.
(They wanted $8 duty/taxes on $4 packs of cigarettes, just as an idea!)

The best thing to do is stay within your maximum duty-free allotment which I believe to be 24 beer or a litre of spirits. If you go over and have to pay duty, it's going to work out to be more expensive than buying it in Canada.

beer isnt THAT expensive here....it's more trouble than it's worth to bring liquor across the border.

You can brew your own once you get here and its one third the cost...also...Canadian beer really is much better than suds from the US....the duty is pretty high....not sure of amount any more...but I brought back 2 litres of rum back from the Philippines and Canada only allowed one..the duty on the second was high! ....you can always smuggle them in...fill up your bottled water with white rum or vodka! they will never check that.
