Actually, they break down all the time... You only notice them when it's raining.

You only USE them when it's raining. It makes sense that metal and rubber don't actively fatigue unless they are being stressed, which will not occur unless there is a use.

seems that you wouldnt notice them to break unless you were or were trying to use them
