standby tickets are usually cheaper than garantied seats. However, you are usually not given a set flight time and are not garantied a seat. you usually have to wait until there is an open seat- sometimes it works out great, other times it takes 12 hours to get to a 3 hour destination. best of luck.

Airlines usually charge lots of money for standby seating and there are no guarantees (unless someone removes a passenger for suspicious behavior or something like that).
