Hi,
I was recently in an accident in which I was mostly at fault. I claimed to my insurance company and they raised the premium from this cycle. If I change to another insurance company, will they check my past driving record with my previous insurance company?

Yep. Virtually all insurance companies participate in an information exchange database that shares this type of information. Many state DMVs also supply driving record data to it as well.

When you apply for insurance you are asked about your driving record. Concealment of a material fact (tickets, accidents, medical conditions, etc.) is considered insurance fraud.

Although it can be prosecuted, the most likely outcome is a substantial increase in your rates a month or two after the policy is issued. That, or your insurance will be cancelled outright.

If you have a claim and they discover that you concealed a material fact on your application, they may deny coverage completely.

The accident would be on record with the state, and that's where insurance companies check. Also, insurance companies check with each other in a central database.

Insurance companies have a reporting agency kinda like the credit reporting agency is to credit lenders. Some examples of these are Choicetrust, and C.L.U.E. They also report your driving record to the company that you give permission to request you information. I works kinda like the credit data companies, they keep track of the accidents that other insurance companies report, your driving record from the state you are licensed in, etc. Hope this helps.

Yes. But they don't check with each other, they check a database with that information. However, you are not supposed to withhold that information from them when you get the policy.

They will run your MVR and your CLUE report. The CLUE report is the report that has all the informatoin about yoru accident on it. So if you change insurance companines, they will run the report and see your accident.
