my daughter (8), sometimes does not make it to the toilet on time, she had urine infections as a small child, she can go for months without a problem, then maybe has been out playing and cannot get in on time, is this related to the uti?

Recurrent UTIs can cause chronic irritation of the urethra. This irritation can also be exacerbated by dehydration. Concentrated urine can be very irritating to an already twitchy bladder/urethra. Make sure she is drinking plenty of fluid (8 glasses of water a day) and a glass of cranberry juice every day. The cranberry juice will help keep her urine on the acidic side to ward of UTIs.

You also need to make certain she's using proper hygiene when it comes to her private parts (vulva). Believe it or not, baths can cause urinary symptoms in little girls, so showers are better. Use a mild soap like Ivory and make sure she's rinsing it all off. Also make certain she's wiping from front to back when going to the bathroom to prevent contamination of her vulval area from stool.

Also encourage her to urinate as soon as she feels the urge and not to hold it until she's "desparate". Often times kids get so caught up in what they're doing, they don't want to take the time to stop and pee. So, they wait until they're at a critical point.

Try this for a week or so, and if her symptoms persist or worsen, get her in to see a urologist to make certain she doesn't have a chronic problem like interstitial cystitis.

Once I got 13 UTI's in one year. I'm a pro at these...they're horrible. Yes, holding it for long periods of time when you need to urinate is one reason...or when she pees she isn't completely emptying her bladder. That can cause an infection as well. Also, you can give her cranberry juice or AZO, an over-the-counter pill that helps relieve the pain until you can see a doctor. If this helps, then you need to add a few things to her diet (like deep green leafy veggies), and make sure she drinks plenty of water.

Hope this helps!

UTI can always be a consideration for such a description. Another thing that helps is called "timed voiding", try to have her go to the toilet every 90-120 minutes whether she feels like it or not. See if this helps over time, feel free to email me or call your doctor with any questions

Could be, or perhaps she is just holding it too long? Which in turn can lead to an infection.

she might have a weak bladder. I think that the doctor can prescribe some meds for that to strengthen it. my friend has a simular problem with her daughter and the meds seem to help.
