The ship never sank. It had a gash in it after it hit a reef off of Prince William Sound off southern Alaska. The gash spilled the oil on March 24 1989.
I was actually in Disney World when this happened and remember watching the news in my hotel room.

It did not sink, it got holed in Alaska in 1989 and spilled lots of oil.
