A Duke is second only to a prince.

An Earl is a lower rank, equivalent to a Count.

King, Prince,Duke, Marquis, Earl, Viscount,and Baron. In the old days Bishops ranked with Dukes and Cardinals were Princes.

In the nobility class rankings the Duke out ranks the Earl...

I guess if you are the Duke of Earl.....then your just Cool......

But there is only one DUKE! .....and that is JOHN WAYNE!

They are titles of nobility and not specifically applicable to the military. In the old day, it depended on how many troops either the Duke or Earl could afford.
