If it is a registered dog, I like to somehow combine parts of the name of the sire and mother (they won't let me use the proper term on this website) for the registration papers. Then you can either use part of that name for the name that you call the dog or choose a name that reflects it's personality or some other aspect. You didn't say if the dog was male or female, but you could always use some German name/word (since this is where the dachshund originated from) like Fritz, for a male or Frau Frau (a shortening of frauline), for a female. I have a horse that I named Bank on Cougar (a combination of his sire's & dam's names) but call B.C. Please, if it is a male, don't call him Hitler (unless he plans on taking over the world).

Stubby, Fritz, Max (the popular name for a dog,) or you can wait and see what his (sorry, I am assuming a male)/hers personality is like and probably a name will pop up that fits your pet perfectly.
