I fly both and like/dislike each for different reasons.

Southwest: Don't like feeling like I'm in a cattle car - don't like that you cannot reserve seats which sometimes means you have no room for your carry on as the space is already full. Also they are trying (in some cities) the new idea of THEM assigning you a seat which means you have absolutely no choice of where to sit - that would freak me out as I like to be near the front and always on the isle. Have a friend who is a flight attendant for Southwest and she says that routine is a nightmare cause all are complaining - can't blame them - you pay for the ticket and don't get a choice??

Like: I do like the lower fares and will fly them but only for short distances - long distance flights mean several layovers and too much time. Plus I don't mind getting there earlier to grab a good seat - but you do need to get to the airport pretty early.

America West: Like that you can reserve the seat you want - also like that you can pay a little more to be in first class - I use AM West all the time from SFO to Vegas and for $50 I can be in first class - you can go on line 30 hrs before your flight and do this. They base the upgrade fee on the # of miles you will be flying - which means that longer flight will cost more to upgrade.

However, if I don't get in 1st class I'm not real happy as it is crowded and there is practically no service.

So, I'm not real crazy about either airline but it depends on where I'm going - rates are definetly cheaper on Southwest.

Hope this helps......happy flying :)

I HATE southwest now. especially since they did that ABC thing were you stand in line. OK OK so you go through security, and then wanna just sit and relax, NO, you have to stand cause everyone has A or B so thats the seats right there if you dont get in line. The worst airline, but the price is still good.

They're both okay. Southwest, like someone else said is good for cheap fares on short jaunts, but their seating system is ridiculous.

America West merged with US Airways recently, so it's the same as any US Air flight. Prices aren't the cheapest, but they aren't the most expensive either.

If you really want good service try Jet Blue if its available. They have very friendly, helpful staff on the ground and good in flight services. In addition, they have real good prices.
