I know a guy that used to say that. He even said it all through the lead up to the wedding.
In the end he wore nice slacks and a collared shirt with a vest and polished black boots.
Although this was not a "formal" wedding, it meant a lot to his bride that he would go out of his comfort zone for her.
You do not need to wear a full formal suit, but you should put in a bit more effort than what you would wear for your usual night out on the town! It is a special occasion and when the time comes, you need to take it seriously. Your bride would no doubt feel terrible if you don't.

Suits are just one more thing to show your status, high esteem, and blindly following the norms without reasoning it. If you(the couple) agree to break any such unnecessary and useless norms then you have a great applause from me. You both decide what to wear, but something decent. Ask your partner to read these answers. It will be easy for her to agree. But don't force her or be stubborn. By saying you, I mean for all males on the earth.

Men usually wear at least a business suit, even at an informal wedding.
It's spelled etiquette.

No, they do not have to wear suits. It usually depends on what kind of wedding you have and what you and your future bride plan.

If its your wedding you can wear whatever you want, even a bikini like some celebrities seem to favour.

Nope! I have seen all kinds of things at a wedding. Just make sure and talk to your fiancee about it first, you wouldn't want to give her any bad surprises!

No, it's not necessary. My brother got married in a hawiian tee shirt and khaki pants. It was a cool weddding.
