Bacteria usually saps out nutrients on a cellular level or their numbers just get out of control and our immune system can' zap enough of them in time.

Viruses are free-floating DNA or RNA with a protein shell. They need to attach to our DNA to replicate themselves using our cellular equipment and needless to say, that puts everything "out of whack". This includes cell lysis, the breaking open and subsequent death of the cell. In multicellular organisms, if enough cells die the whole organism will start to suffer the carry-on effects. Although many viruses result in the disruption of healthy homeostasis, resulting in disease, they may reside relatively harmlessly within an organism. An example would include the ability of the herpes simplex virus, which cause coldsores, to remain in a dormant state within the human body.

they eat the nutrients from your cells to feed themselves. They don't care how you feel. In fact, when you feel crappy it may be even better environment for them, until your body gets the defences up or gets some help from medicine.
