This is very important to me. It etched on the front of a statue in front of either the Library Of Congress or the National Archives. I am thinking of using it for a memorial and it was the 1st thing that popped into my head when I was thinking of about the memorial. Please be serious about this question, some of the answers for my other question were silly and it was not a silly subject. thank you for any help.

It means that whatever has happened in the past has led up to present day events. Sort of set the stage.

EXTRA: It does not mean that histroy repeats itself. In a play or book a prologue is an introductory piece explaining past events and setting the scene. The phrase given simply means that without our history, life would not be what it is today, good or bad.

"What is past is Prologue." That which happens in your past sets the stage for the future. As the prologue sets up the backdrop for the play, so too does history lay the foundation for what is to happen in the future.

A prologue is what happened before the book began, what led up to the book, the back story. It is before chapter one in books that have one. Since it happened before it is the past.

It means that everything that has come before is just an introduction to what is happening now because the story (life) is still in the process of being told.
