I have a 10 month old son and my husband and I are trying to teach him to walk, but whenever we hang on to his hands he starts walking on his tip toes?? Is this normal or should I consult my doctor?? Are there any other ways that can get him to start walking and not on his tip toes?

If she doesn't do it all the time, it's unlikely that it means anything at this age. Most children "toe walk" occasionally when they're cruising (moving around a room using various objects for support) and when they're first starting to walk, especially if they're walking on a bare floor. Some kids keep doing it, off and on, just for fun — the same way they try to walk along crosswalk lines or step over cracks in the sidewalk.

If your daughter is toe walking consistently, however, talk to her pediatrician.

Don't worry it is normal for kids to walk on the tip toes, my daughter is almost 2 and at time walks on her toes. But when she has her shoes on she walks just fine like a normal person.

Perfectly normal, but like a few others have already posted, keep an eye on it. If he continues to do this after he starts to walk on his own, make sure to tell his ped about it.

A few kids exhibit this trait if they do not like the feel of the floor on their feet, or other external stimulation, like clothes and such. It's a symptom of a sensory integration disorder.

BUT- he's little and learning to walk! Congrats! A lot of kids start out on their toes. Just chiming in cuz you asked if there's cause for concern... probably most definitely not.

Its very normal. I work with babies birth to 2 years old. Some walk on their tip toes even when they walk on their own.

O.K., I know that there is a huge list of answers already, but please read this one.

My daughters 1st step was on her toes. I never thought anything about it. I thought that it was kind of cute. She never did get off her toes. At age 7, the PE teacher suggested that I take her to an Ortho to get her checked out. Turns out that her Achilles tendon has shrunk and she's lost range of motion. His recommendation was surgery to stretch the tendon. My answer was "no". I wanted other nonsurgical options. Well, my daughter is going to be 11 next month and I've seen 4 specialists and have finally found one that listed all the options for me. She is going to be casted this month...it's called "serial casting". It's to help stretch the tendon.

My advice to you is to watch the progress of your child. Maybe he will walk flat as soon as he masters walking. If not, don't wait like I did, get him to a specialist as soon as possible. And don't let them do surgery!! As I was told by my daughters specialist, surgery is a final option, and not the best one.

He is trying to find his balance. If you are concerned, call the doctor. At least you will have peace of mind. Every human being on the planet walks on flat feet, so I'm sure he will grow out of it. He is just beginning to learn to walk. There really isn't anything you can do to get him to stop--he is only 10 months old. You can't force him to start walking until he is good and ready. My nephew took forever to start crawling, but he had his own time frame for starting to crawl and walk--which coincidentally wasn't on his parents' time frame. He will figure it out. Let him decide when to start walking and such. Good luck!

My niece walked on her toes. She's 10 now and does not do that anymore. Both my girls walk on their toes. I do believe that it's a common thing and I wouldn't worry about it. My three year old still prances on her toes if she's running through the house. It's fine.

thats absolutly normal. Its all about balance for him at this time and the best way to do that for a toddler is by tip-toe walking. Relax he,ll progress just nicley into using the heal of his foot right after hes sure he isn,t going to fall

Babies are babies. Perhaps, when he tried for the first time to balance himself without anybody holding him, he was on his tip toes. Then, because he was able to do it, he believed that it was the only way to walk. Don't worry. In a little while, as he improves his walking stunts, you would notice that he would be on his feet without you having to teach him how.

If he does it all the time, for months, then consult your pediatrician. (It could be the symptom of a neurological disorder. But that's rare.) Otherwise, it's totally normal. Tons of toddlers walk this way when they're figuring it out.

One other note: PLEASE don't put your baby in stiff-soled shoes! NO shoes are best when children are learning to walk. If it's too cold or too wet, and you feel shoes are necessary, make sure they're soft and flexible with non-slip soles. Kids need to feel the ground and develop the muscles in their feet. Stiff, clunky shoes, hightop or no, will just get in his way.
