I have two boys, and JUST finished potty training the two year old. It is NOT too early to start! Put the potty seat in the tub and place the naked child in front of it. Splash warm water on his front and when he starts peeing, clap hands and say yea! Pee pee in the potty! After a few times he'll notice it and like it.
Next, go to Target or Babies are us and buy Training Pants. These are the big thick quilted underpants, not pull ups. Pull Ups are the reason that children aren't trained until age 5. Also, have you tried to ever take off a poop-filled Pull Up? I watched a friend do it and Euww!!!! Use Training pants to help "feel the wetness" without a really big mess. Also, teach the boy from the start to stand to pee, not sitting down. That way, he can relate to Daddy.
Next, be consistent. Check with him every two hours and bring him to the potty and go over everything. Stay home while training; no shopping trips, playdates down the street, etc. Rewards for poop in the potty really work. With my kids, stickers on a chart and bringing their favorite bedtime toy downstairs was a good reward.
Sure, there will be accidents, but be consistent and the training will work. Good luck.

I potty trained my son at the same time and was done with it in about 2 weeks with occasional accidents after that if we were not close enough to a potty. We did not use pull ups we went straight to the quilted underwear. It can be a little gross but I think that helped him understand a little faster. It also helped that he was going through a phase of not liking to be wet. Just be consistent for two or three weeks and if he seems like he is not getting it at all then you could stop and try again sometime later.

If he has interest in using the potty go ahead and let him. A couple other "signs" to look for in potty training readiness are...keeping a dry diaper for long periods of time while awake and occasionally at nap time. Not liking to be wet or soiled..asking to be changed.
At 20 months I would not force him, let your son take the lead. He is still quite young...generally boys potty train later than girls do. My son was two and a half when we started he just turned 4 and is still wearing pull ups at night. As far as the pull ups versus cloth training pants. I have tried both...the cloth pants are much more difficult to clean up than the pull ups. The pull ups have sides that can be pulled apart to change just like you would a diaper....the cloth pants have to be pulled down and the mess gets everywhere!! My son pooped in the potty long before he would consistently pee in it. He did not like having a poopy diaper. Give LOTS of praise! Have him go with Daddy or another male influence...my son went with my Dad since hubby was deployed. He related much better to him than me....as far as aiming goes...we are still working on that too. My dad keeps telling my son to make bubbles in the water. I cannot use anything in the toilet for him to aim at...some use Cheerios as targets...at my house the whole box would end up in the toilet.
Sorry if I rambeld on...Hope some of what I wrote helps!

I don't think it's too early. My son just turned 17 months and I am beginning to potty train. I bought a potty for him and every time I would go potty I would take his diaper off and he'd sit on his potty. He peed the first time and was very excited about it. Three days after I started this he was playing in the living room, he stopped, grabbed himself and went into the bathroom and lifted the lid on the big potty. I took off his diaper and sat him on the toilet and he peed. I hope this helps.

If he is interested, it is not too early. I urge you to not use pull ups, they don't work anything like they are suppose to, they are just glorified diapers. They are good for naps and bedtime. Go for real underwear, put the plastic pants on too if it makes you more comfortable. My son was in daycare so we did the underwear on some weekends first, then when he started getting pretty good on weekends, we went to full time. He caught on pretty well. Being a preschool teacher I can tell you the kids that go to underwear instead of pull ups train twice as fast.
I hope that helps you, and I wish you lots of luck!!!

wait til hes 2 and ahalf or you will be defeating your own purpose and be prepared for a very long battle. i have a three and a half year old. i just got him trained 3 weeks ago. start with the pull ups. take him every half hour to hour. he will scream and cry. but he will get over it. once hes keeping those dry for most of the day other than naps and bedtime. put big boy undies. be prepared. he will wet them. dont punish him for it. just tell him next time lets make sure we use the potty. reward him everytime he goes potty. in the potty good luck/ feel free to email me for more tips

dont get the plastic ones, you wil lhave a mess.. the pull ups would work .. and 20 months is no way to early especially if he is showing signs of wanting to use potty ..
as you have time, try to take him every 15 mins to the potty and let him sit there, maybe even tell him to make peepee .. as he gets more used to this extend the time he waits between potty visits.. so he learns to potty in the toilet and also learns to hold his bladder

Buy him some underwear like his dad's and tel him they are big boy pants, also have your husband take him to use the toilet when he goes himself so he can learn by modeling. DO not use the pull ups unless he's at daycare or you're going out of the house. Use them at night but during the day use the regular underwear.

Get one of those plastic rings that float in the toilet for "target" practice, and have dad show him how to do it, make it fun and he'll be going by himself in no time. Make sure you have a safe sturdy little stepstool if he's too short to reach standing in front of the toilet. Get him used to the big potty, because big people don't use chairs, know what I mean?
As for pooping, he'll catch on to that pretty quick after he has his first success and you praise the heck out of him.

1 boy and 2 girls here
If he is interested, encourage it. But don't push it since he is still very young. Follow his lead.
I don't recommend the "feel and learn" pullups. I call them "leak and lean" instead. You'll most likely clean up as many messes with those as if you did normal underwear. Find the underwear with the thick cloth layer inside and a vinyl outer cover. Walmart usually carries them.
