If you do a yahoo search for oxygen cycle you should find a very elaborate answer. My A&P teacher gave us this question as a bonus question and I didn't get it right because I didn't go in depth enough. He wanted the entire cycle of oxygen in our bodies, from inhalation to the different areas of the heart, to the arteries, capillaries and back to the heart and lungs to be exhaled. Or, if you have a nursing book (not sure if you are a nursing student but that is why I took A&P) then the cycle is in there.

Here it is. The electron transport chain in the mitochondria of the cell is the final step in the creation of ATP from ADP, and oxygen is the final electron acceptor. Without oxygen the chain will not continue, ATP production will cease and you will live for about 15 seconds. And now for a bit of trivia, cyanide and barbiturates are two poisons that stops the electron transport chain and that is why they are lethal.

oxygen is needed to be taken by a red blood cell to organ and carry back carbon diox. the blood cells exchanges these in the avolei, which is in the lungs
