Because we evolved near sea level on the planet Earth where oxygen is prentiful. I suppose other molecules may be able to replace oxygen, but oxygen must be better and those that did not use oxygen near sea level on planet Earth were killed by those that did. I guess deep sea organism may be different.

Think of human bodies like a combustion engine. Just like you need gasoline (in gaseous form) to run a car you need oxygen for the metabolic processes in your body. Without oxygen your cells wouldn't be able to get the energy they need.

The guy who compared us to combustion engines isn't far off. We use oxygen to oxidize things like glucose:
C6H12O6 + 6O2 --> 6H2O + 6CO2 + energy
In combustion, the energy is mostly released as heat. Except for keeping us warm, heat is essentially useless so we don't really want to do that. In our bodies the oxidation process is broken into several discrete steps that are coupled with ATP generation. Instead of releasing all of that energy in one bright flash, we store the energy into ATP molecules that can be used to drive various cellular processes that require energy.
We have evolved to use oxygen as our oxidizing agent -- presumably because it is plentiful in our environment. Other organisms living in strange environments have evolved to use other oxidizing agents....

Humans need oxygen to produce energy for their daily functions..(walking, thinking, talking, etc..) .. Energy is produced by the carbohydrates from the food we eat. Oxygen is required to break down the carbohydrates into carbon dixoide and water to release energy.

the main purpose of oxygen is to act as a free radical accepter. at the end of electron transport system a free radical is released which if not controlled can destroy the cell. it happens only in aerobic metabolism. thus only aerobic organism needs oxygen
