Give her a small amount of pepto bismol, I have friends that have done this with a cat and rabbits and it worked very well. I believe they used the smallest recommended dose, but it is still possible that it could still make her sick, so you should be aware of that before making the decision to do that.

If the diarrhea is severe, and/or accompanied by other symptoms (such as lethargy) then try to contact an after-hours emergency clinic right away, or see if any of the local vets will meet you at their clinic after hours. It's more expensive to meet a vet who is off-duty, but worth it if you actually save a pet's life. Severe diarrhea could indicate some sort of poisoning or even distemper. Either way, that isn't something you treat yourself.
Even if it's just an upset tummy, giving her people medicine is highly questionable. First, you don't know how much to administer, and since you don't know the cause of the diarrhea, you don't know whether stopping it or letting it take it's course is best for your pet.
If you are willing to take those risks, then contact a pharmacist and see what they would suggest. I think I've known people who have given their dogs SMALL SMALL SMALL amounts of Pepto Bismol before, but again just know that it's risky for you to undertake this on your own....I wouldn't do it unless the diarrhea is severe and repeated and there are no after-hour alternatives available to you.

The traditional home remedy is a teaspoon of Arrowroot in a cup, mix to a thin cream with a 50/50 mix milk and water and give him that to drink 2 or 3 times a day. Its safe for very young animals. Arrowroot safely binds them up, but be careful because it masks the symptoms, not cures the cause. If the upset stomach is a 48 hour bug or similar it can help to control the dehydration. You get arrowroot from the baking section of the supermarket, don't subetitute cornflour as it irritates the bowel instead of soothing it

The flavor in Pepto Bismal makes some dogs throw up and if you do try to give it you might want to do it in the tub as it will be very messy....pink everywhere. Do you know what upset the dog? Was it something eaten or stress? When dogs eat bad stuff sometimes it helps to give them some plain(no butter etc) bread to help absorb the cause of the upset. Make sure you watch fluid intake. If you don't see your dog drinking try offering ice cubes for something different. Please call your vet asap as small dogs can get very sick really fast.

DON'T GIVE PEPTOBISMOL! A little bit of keo pectate (sp?) will help. A little bit = a few drops. In the morning take her to the vet first thing. It could be very serious if the diarrhea doesn't stop. The vet will also find out what caused it in the first place.

RE:
My dog has diarrhea, what human medicine can I give her?
What can I give her to slow down or stop her diarrhea. It's late and I can't get her anything from the vet...what household medicine can I give her? She weighs about 6-8 pounds. Thanks.

You can give your little pooch either pepto or keopectate ( liquid or tablet) it will not hurt her and a vet will tell you to do the same thing. I used to be a vet assistant. Another thing to try ( this is knowledge from a vet) is to fix her a cup of white rice (like the 60sec.kind and a little bit of boiled chicken, the rice will help coat her stomach and after her stool is hard again gently wean her off of it. I would go for the pepto first, it's cheaper.

Yes you CAN give pepto, for your dogs weight I would go with 1/8th teaspoon repeat in 4 hrs., I have been fighting this for 3 days now due to my cocker being on Deramaxx. I'd given my the liquid, then when I phoned the vet he said give her 1 pep tablet, my dog weighs 40 lbs. so yes, give her some pep dismal liquid till you can get her into the vet.

Don't give any meds first you have to figure out why she has loose stools is because she is stressed or is it something she ate? did you just change her diet? or go for a care ride? these are important questions if its stress try a little of cottage cheese in with the next feeding the bacteria in cottage cheese and yogurt is good for the G.I. tract if you just changed the diet you need to mix old food with new food and GRADUALLY wean them over if its car sickness give her a few hours and offer some broth just a little if it persists contact your vet
