A life of devotion to God will not grant you more reward than someone who makes a "deathbed" conversion. The parable states that God loves them both.

The main conflict is that a son would want to take his inheritance and squander it on partying rather than doing something wise with it like investing. Thus, his behavior forces him from the security of his family.

Then, when he humbles himself to come home and offers to be a servant, his brother is jealous that he is greeted with a big party.

Maybe that is why the prodigal son went astray to begin with; he couldn't compete with the perfect son who was always trying to outdo him.

Reveals much about the personality of God.
In the illustration:
Father = God
Wayward son = disobedient servant of God.
Faithful son = obedient servant of God.
Debauched Life = Disobedient
Return = Complete change / Repentance
Father's seeing and coming to meet = Making the way to forgiveness easy
Welcome by Father = Forgiveness
Faithful sons anger = Lack of forgiveness
Lesson: Imitate the Father

Are you serious? The one son catered to the parents every need while the other brother squandered his life away. When the wandering party animal finally came home there was a celebration. The devoted son who stayed home was insulted that he was pushed aside as favor was shown to his wayward brother. Basically he was his parents schlep for so many years and didn't get anything out of it.

The Moral?
Don't be a schlep!

There is more than one....let me name some and see if that is what you are looking for..........

first conflict.......son wants his inheritance NOW, he is conflicted in what he is doing vs what he WANTS.

He leaves and spends all his money, then faces another conflict...poverty.

He is conflicted about what to do, recalls his father's servants eat well.

He returns and we meet the other son, who is conflicted about how come brother gets a party for being a jerk, while I have been faithful forever.

Father tells him to resolve HIS conflict by knowing his brother was DEAD and lives again.

Any of those the one you wanted?
