Gargamel(a warlock) and Papa Smurf both made potions and magic. When I was a kid my brother and I watched Smurfs every Saturday and have grown up to be active and faithful members of our churchs (despite not being raised in church as kids). So why do you get so upset/worried about Harry Potter? (yes I have seen the movies, my children have not, they are too young)

Actually you are right on! I used to look at my pastor like he's crazy because he would tell me the smurfs are satanic or at least involved in those affiliated types of activities.

The smurfs have European origins (the creators another words) In Europe wicken has always been much more widely accepted then in the US. (Harry Potter is all European right?!?)
Anyways, Papa Smurf was just as bad as Gargamel!
Including times in the series where Papa Smurf would call on the "Gods" or spirits (something like that) and draw a circle around himself with a pentagram in the middle! ("Get behind the satan!!!")

So from a Christian perspective, which is worse?

Both are geared towards kids unfortunately.
I think I'd take Harry over the smurfs any day!

The smurfs are far more dangerous! (........did i just say smurfs are dangerous???) :-) Geared towards a younger audience and having those those things almost subconsciously indoctrinated into our heads is much, MUCH worse than Harry Potter who is out the closet, "flaunting it" with wizardry.

Tell your kids Harry Potter is in to wizardry and they'll look at you like "duh." Tell your kids the smurfs are of the devil, they'll look at you like you're nuts! To satan, it's what I would call the perfect crime.

I was a kid when the smurfs were on. And yes I watched the cartoon. But to be honest, I never really paid attention to the fact that there was magic in it. I was not aware of it until I was much much older.

I know you're kidding Baby Girl. But did you know they
actually had a conspiracy thing out about the Smurfs?
How they made education look bad by always making fun
of Brainy Smurf? I can't remember the rest of what they
dreamed up, but I got off!
Look on the web for Sherry Shriner's stuff. It will blow your mind.

I used to work with a few women who thought all Harry Potter books should be burned, yet amazingly, the have never opened one and they all read romance smut. SO, its mainly in ignorance that they want Harry Potter banned. They have no idea how literarily correct the books are. In fact, I have a 6 year old grandson who bewails the fact that his older brother hasn't read the 6th one yet so his parents can read it to him at bed time.

I wasn't allowed to watch the smurfs when I was a kid for this very reason.

If you watch Harry Potter in a mirror and play the movie backwards you'll get a message from Satan.

What worries me about the smurfs is the male to female ratio.

I think its mostly christian thinking about the prohibition against witches and magic. Though I don't believe it to be bad myself, but I know people who do. You can live an ethical moral life and not be a christian.
