Some of the symptoms are: redness; outer ear canal full of dark waxy substance; dog pawing at the ear or crying because of pain; ear sensitive to touch; head shaking; foul smell coming from the ear; elevated temperature.
Sometimes an "infection" is actually caused by mites, or there could be a foreign object in the ear. In any event, take the dog to the vet right away.

You may notice an odor and/or brown debris in the ears. usually the dog scratches ears and shakes head. If in doubt take your dog to the vet. Your vet can show you how to do maintanance ear cleanings so your dog doesn't get an infection again.

If your dog is rubbing his head against the floor or if he his pawwing at his ear. Try checking his ear to see if something is unusual. My dog had a yeast infection in her ear by me not wiping her ears good after I gave her a bath and these were the telltalke signs. The vet will give meds for it!!! Good luck!!

Scratching at the ears, redness inside the ears, unpleasant odor. This is especially true for long-eared dogs. Use EPI-Otic, available from your vet, for regular cleaning. Use Lotrimin cream (for humans) available OTC, to fight the infection. It is an anti-fungal, which is probably the cause of the problem.

Usually the ear will look red and irritated, most dogs will scratch them a lot too, or not let you near it. If your dog is acting like his ear hurts or is itchy, I would call a vet about an apointment.

Could have ear mites. They leave a black residue inside the ear. Dogs scratch at their ears a lot.

My dog used to shake his head a lot, kinda like when they want shake off excess water but only the head. Also, his ears stunk really bad and he scratched them often. Of course, your vet will be able to tell this more accurately

The ear becomes inflamed, and very tender to the dog, if you touch it the dog will start to rub its head on the ground or whine. Call a vet immediatly.
