I was diagnosed with crohn's a little over a year ago, and I was pregnant when I first got sick. It's been a horrible experience. I spent around a total of four months in the hospital, spanning over a years time. I was on prednizone and so many other things. Had blood transfusions, and serious malnutrition. This was caused by the inflamation of my intestines make it impossible for me to go to the bathroom, so my colon got backed up, and I couldn't eat. Which also caused intestinal bleeding leading to the transfusions. My son was born premature, although thankfully he was healthy, although tiny. I get ulcers in my mouth and my throat. I have low patassium and magnesium lvls which cause my joints to get stiff and very painful, also for my fingers to cramp up and get stuck in weird positions. I got down to 70 lbs and it took me almost 8 months to get back to normal. I found that out of everything the doctor recomended the thing that helped the most was fiber and stool softeners. I have gotten it pretty much under control now and I go a while in between episodes, but I live with the constant fear every day wondering if it will be my last good day for a while. And everybodies body reacts differently to the foods they eat, some people with Crohn's have had to change their diet. I really haven't, maybe I should lol, but I have found that my symptoms come and go and don't change no matter what I do or don't eat. So I just eat what I want. But some people have cut out tomatoes (katchup, spagettie, etc.), and other cut out pastas, or dairy. You have to find what works for you. Plz feel free to email me, it always helps to have someone to talk to about these things. destine79@hotmail.com. Or anyone who wants to talk about crohn's feel free to email me.

Three excellent references that give in-depth discussions and useful recommendations are: Digestive Wellness - Elizabeth LIpski
Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine - Murray & Pizzorno (see inflammatory bowel disease)
Prescription for Natural Cures (Balch & Stengler) gives it a separate chapter.
