They (the Democrats who control the state Congress) did this to put Swartzenegger in a bad spot. He is trying to straddle the immigration issue. However, if he doesn't veto this, he could lose voters, not to Angelides, but to abstention (or protest votes).
I am hoping he will veto it with one of his 'we can't afford another social program' rationales. He can ignore the fact that the money would come out of what is available for LEGAL residents to go to college.
Gabster - why should illegals be educated when there aren't enough good college slots and funding for our own children? Our children would contribute more to the country as college graduates as well, and since we their parents legally worked and paid taxes, our children are more deserving of government funding.
It isn't as if every high school graduate who wants to go to university has funding, and there is some left over after all others get to go.

I'm not a Californian... but lets face it just because something is happening in another state does not mean it wont happen in other states too...these things have a way of spreading...personally I'm sick and tired of these illegals .. they commit a crime entering our country, then protest our country / carry flags above our upside down flags ,threaten a revolution, take jobs away from our unemployed , send the money they make back across the border instead of spending it here/ helping our economy, get welfare, free health care, school for the kids... and now they want free college too??? does anyone understand the word... illegal?????... we gave them amnesty years ago..... its way past time to send them all back...

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaign fired back at the governor's chief rival on one of the Democrat's favorite issues Tuesday, asking why he said nothing as public university fees shot up under a former Democratic governor.
State Treasurer and Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Angelides for months has been blasting the Republican incumbent for letting University of California and California State University fees rocket upward, foreclosing educational opportunities for children of working families. He has vowed to roll the fees back if elected governor in November.
…
But the Schwarzenegger campaign asked Tuesday why Angelides had stayed silent as public-college costs shot up under Gov. Gray Davis in 2003. Facing their share of the state's massive budget crunch, UC's regents increased fees nearly 30 percent, CSU's trustees raised fees by about 35 percent, and the California Community Colleges' raised fees by 63 percent.
"Treasurer Phil Angelides said absolutely nothing," Schwarzenegger campaign spokesman Matt David said in a news release. "Someone should ask why he wasn't fighting for middle-class Californians back then."

I thought he was against illegals. He always talked about protecting the border and blah blah. Wouldnt it be better to make them legal first?

Actually, the extra [cheap] labor will be needed to cart you Californians around town (perhaps on rickshaws), b/c Arny's Kyoto aspirations will make conventional transportation too onerous. Maybe this is his plan.
