I understand that breeders work hard and spend a lot of time improving their breeds...and that is great, I look up to them for that. But why is it when you mention wanting to breed cross-bred dogs they get all bent out of shape about it. First of all if they are just doing it for the money that is one thing...but I dont understand what the big deal is about wanting to dedicate their lives by trying to improve the cross-breed and get it recognized by the AKC. Those people are just trying to do what our ancestors did 100's of years ago to get the breeds we have today. There is NO difference!!! So stop being a dog racist!

excuse me but how can two dogs not be compatible??? They all originated from the wolf.
And also...if you read my question you would see that I ment what is the problem with breeding cross-breeds if you are doing it for the right reasons...NOT for money or anything else besides the love of the breed.
And 3rd...if the shelters are over populated then why are there so many breeders for the same breed???

My question SPECIFICLY says that I do NOT agree with doing it for the money! MONEY is not the question!!!! Love of the breed and wanting everyone else to love it is the question

Yes, there is a real big difference!!!The reason people get bent out of shape over crossbreds is 1) there are already over 350 recognized breeds of dogs, in every size, color, coat type, bred for every purpose so there is no need to "create" more 2) crossbreeding isn't being undertaken with any particular goal in mind other then a lot of fabricated excuses 3) there are thousands of mix bred dogs in shelters and thousands get euthanised daily. 4) many crossbreedings should not be put together because they aren't compatible 5) delibrate crossbreeding is nothing more then a sales ploy rifled with flimsy excuses in order to line someones pockets. It has nothing to do with being "dog racist". Also it is false that crossbred dogs have better temeraments or are healthier then purebreds. Mixes can and do have just as many training & behavior issues as purebreds and they also have just as many and the same health problems as do purebreds..this includes hip & elbow dysplasia, heart disease, eye issues, etc. One reason purebreds have gotten a bad rap is because of all the irresponsible breeders out there who don't practice proper breeding, health testing, temperament testing, pedigree research, etc.

There is no other reason for doing it. Money is it. They are NEVER going to be recognized by the AKC. That is just how it is. It is a fad thing that people are doing. They do not get the health clearances on the two parents they are breding, they lie to people and tell them they are going to get the best of both breeds, they tell them they don't shed, they won't have health problems and all kinds of things.
The other problem is that the best of either breed is not being used. No good breeder would allow their best Champion to be part of a mixed breed breeding. So, what is being produced is not even good quality!!!!!
There is no reason!!!!!! Cockapoos are a great example!! YEARS for breeding them and they do not breed true...STILL!!! People breeding them are still breeding Cocker to Poodle. They are not going any farther!!! Once they find that they get a variety of things when the first breed Cockapoo to Cockapoo, they give up and go back to CockerXPoodle.
Creating a new breed is just not necessary!!!! They are not being bred to do anything the original two breeds could do, most of them are just lap pets.
There is a difference between what our ancestors did and what they are doing!!!!!!!!!! Our ancestors need a dog for a specific reason and crossed breeds to get there and then kept at it to get an actual BREED!!! These people are just breeding to get the money! Most do not even have a clue about breeding!!!!!!!!!!
The DOLT above is a perfect example!!!! Moxing two breeds makes the healthier because the
immume systems combine"!!!!!!!! What a idiot!!!! That is why the whole thing sucks!!!! If I combine a Newfie and a Cocker, I will get a dog that is prone not just to the skin problems, eye problems, ear problems, and temperment issues of the Cocker...but ALSO the hip, elbow, and heart problems of the Newf!!!!!! They DO NOT just cancel each other out!!!!!!!!!!!
People are under this false impression that crosses and mixes are healthier. That is a total untruth!!!!!!!!!!! The product of two purebreds of other brees bred together, just gives you 2 sets of problems to deal with!!!
People need to get a clue!!!

Oh, but there is a difference, a rather large one. Our ancestors were trying to develop a breed, MOST the people breeding crosses today are NOT. There IS no dedicated group and there is no improvement, there can't be when they are still at the F1 stage. The oodle and poo crosses are almost ALL F1 breedings! They are no closer to a 'breed' today then they were 10 years ago because they have NEVER moved past the F1 stage. And then there is the issue of a standard. There IS no standard for these crosses, so there is no standard type to breed towards.
If you want to see a breed in progress, learn about the Silken Windhounds, THERE is a breed in development. They will be AKC, and they ARE a breed because they moved past an F1 a long time ago, have a standard, and they are breeding true to type. THEY have a goup dedicated to improving the breed. Not to mention, there is an actual purpose for them. There is no other small, coated Sighthound.
F1 breeding and no standard, nothing else really needs to be said. It is BASIC genetic principles.

Technically, all of todays purebreds originated by mixing breeds. But in order for them to become a recognized breed, breeders had to spend decades of breeding the best to the best to finally come up with a dog that would look the same each time. And be free of any genetic problems.
People now-a-days just breed because their dog is cute, and they want money. "Cockapoos" have been bred for, like ever, and AKC still does not recognize them. I have yet to see 2 cockapoos that have the same look to them.
People don't put too much thought into what they are breeding with. They don't care that dog A has a genetic disorder and dog B has an overshot jaw. They just care that there are idiots out there who will pay over $1000 for a "maltishipoo". This just results in unhealthy dogs. The same thing happens with people breeding purebreds without keeping the breeds best interest in mind.
True breeders do not make a profit from breeding dogs.

I have no problem with mutts. However, I have a BIG problem with "muttsforbucks breeders" who throw just any two dogs together with no consideration or thought, slap some ridiculous name on it, and charge a huge amount for a so-called "designer breed". It's not a breed..it's a MUTT! No genetic testing is done, no concern for the coat type, body type, etc. Here's a good example of what can go seriously wrong: Say a breeder takes a Pomeranian with Black Skin Disease and breeds it to a Yorkie. First of all these two breeds have totally different coat textures. Second of all BSD is a serious GENETIC defect. The puppies are born with BSD. Have you seen what BSD does? The puppies lose their hair and their skin turns black. There is NO CURE. Any Pom with BSD needs to be spayed or neutered, but to a "muttsforbucks" breeder they don't care..they want a Porkie to rake in some cash. It's absolutely disgusting. They aren't trying to create a new "breed". All they're doing is decimating two recognized breeds.

You answered the question yourself. There are certain breeds that have been around thousands of years. And hello, those breeds that are thousands of years old were not man made. Do some more research on them. Sure some are man made, that are just hundreds maybe less then a hundred years old, but if you look at those breeds closely, and learn more about their charactoristics, you will see that their health, and temporments are not the best. Lots of health issues, and mentel issues. For example, Labradoodles are insane!!! Always jumping, hard to train, known for taking off. They are almost impossible to control or train. And all these terrior breeds that are "young". Did you know that groomers call terrior breeds terrorist breeds??? Thats because they are known for being nasty biters. Most of these new man made breeds have wacky temporments too. And as for the "older breeds", that are thousands of years old, why would any one want to mess with that. They are perfect for what they are. Pharoh Hounds, Greyhounds, etc...
Breeds are put into catagories. Sporting, hound, working, toy, terrior, non sporting etc... because that is their natural instinct. The newfie is a working dog. It works in saving lives in the water. Search and rescue. Powerful gentle giants that brave cold harsh waters to safe lives. Shepards work in SAR (search and rescue), . Hounds smell things out, retreivers retrieve, springers go out hunting. Why mix all that up? People are all mixed up anyway, why drag the poor dogs into it? Most of these "hybrid breeds are small breeds. Why not just stick to a shih-tzu or a poodle. Why a sheapoo? or a schnoodle. And yes, breeders work incredibly hard to maintain a beautiful standard of their breed (well, good breeders do anyway) but these people who breed hybrid dogs don't even use well bred breeds to begin with. Its puppy mill A** Holes looking to make a buck for the most part. It really is just a matter of opinion, but as a person who has had the pleasure and honer of working with some of the finest breeds in the world, I hate to see them turned into a Picaso.

Actually, there is a difference in some animals.
When you start to cross breed you never know what you're going to come up with. Sometimes you get good traits and sometimes you get aggressive ones.
Take Pit Bulls for example. Pure breds can have a good stable emotional state and be loyal pets, BUT when you start mixing other breeds with a pure bred Pit Bull, that's when you get the kind that will turn on you in a split second.
English bulldogs are another example. They were bred to take down a bull in the field, BUT because they were bred genetically for this, a pregnant female Bulldog has to have the puppies taken by cesarean. Otherwise the puppies get stuck in the birth canal and die. The cross breeding make them broad chested as well which means they can't swim. A bulldog will sink in the water without a life jacket on.
That's why some breeders get fanatic when you talk about cross breeding. It's like flipping a coin, you never know which side you're going to get.

i think its because there generally isn't a lot of thought that goes into these new fad cross breeds its mostly about how cute the pups will be and how fast they'll sell. there isn't alot of thought about the temperaments being crossed and a lot of times its not a good idea. good breeders screen the dogs they breed for health issues and good temperaments to insure that the puppies they produce are the best they can be. the show the dogs at national competitions to make sure they've got the best specimen of the breed. i can understand the concern and anger they feel but i don't condone the nasty remarks Ive read them use. i don't feel there is a reason for anyone to get all bent out of shape. it doesn't solve anything.

If you want to own a mutt, fine. They make some wonderful pets, but don't put a fancy name on them and charge big bucks for mutts!!! It takes many generations of mixing the breeds together to get the right combination, where all the dogs have a certain look. There are a lot of mistakes made along the way, a lot of hit and miss before they find just the right mix. Don't put 2 dogs together, call them a fancy name and try to tell people you have some rare wonderful new breed. It is still a mutt.
