I am a teacher. Last year I worked in class with a child that I believe had some sort of autistic tendencies. His parents felt that there was nothing wrong with him. He was never diagnosed and will probably never have any services.

I will have a child who has aspergers in my class this year. His mother is very high strung about him being mainstreamed in a regualar class. (Federal law states that children with disabilities should be placed with non disabled peers as often as possible).
He will have a one to one aid.

I 've babysat for a child who is a high functioning austistic girl. The family is rich, so they were able to afford therapy and programs for her. Although she will never be "normal" she will probably be able to live on her own and work in some capacity.

My former employee has a son who diagnosed with autism. It's difficult to deal with, but if you have instructions or guides to go by, it'd help John and the whole family deal with it better. Ask your family doctor to see the specialist for autism. The specialist will determine how to help your family and John. Good luck.
